Boil bratwurst.

A Russian room mate got a big chunk of beef fat from the butcher, poked holes in it and put garlic cloves in them, sprinkled with salt and pepper and then put it in on a plate in the cupboard for a month. Then got it out and spread it on wonder bread.

Apparently this a very common thing called shpek.

I've seen my wife several times cut up raw chicken meat etc then go and start doing the vegetables on the same board no rinse or anything, every time she says jt was an absent minded mistake, but I'm sure she's trying to kill me

My father had been repackaging a gigantic pack of raw chicken breasts into smaller freezer packs.

There was raw chicken juice all over the cutting board, the counter, everywhere basically.

He grabbed a cleaning cloth and wiped the counter down, then without rinsing it, proceeded to wash his face with it.

Yes, I grew up with a tremendous amount of food issues because of my father. He poisoned us nearly weekly. It was only in my later adulthood where I simply established a rule that I would not eat a single thing that he prepared.

I'm just glad someone had some idea what I was trying to describe.

This post was prompted by a memory of going grocery shopping with a friend. When we got to his place he proceeded to cut open the pack of chicken breasts, open the freezer (normal so far), and place the raw chicken breasts one by one on the freezer shelf with no bags or wrapping of any kind.

He explained to me that he used a window scraper to get them out when he was ready to thaw one and did so by just throwing the raw-dogged breasts in a sliding drawer at the bottom of the fridge. I never ate anything he cooked after that

Man why do I go on the internet? It's nothing but horror.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 19 hours ago

and I love it

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 day ago

Good grief. This is almost as bad as the person who posted about his dad wiping his face with raw chicken juice.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 day ago

I never ate anything he cooked after that

I'd be much more worried about the things he didn't cook.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago

I hate this knowledge, thanks! Horror!

I saw a human person use Tide laundry detergent to wash a Thanksgiving turkey.

Man what the heck is going on in people’s kitchens?? I’m reading some wild responses here. This just confirms why I never eat food at potlucks…

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 day ago

I disagree. They disavowed their human status the moment they did that.

Lotta people apparently thaw meat on the countertop overnight. My mothers husband and his kids only really stopped when I went all "hello I literally have a food manage safety cert, please stop making me cry with this meat thing"

Lots of petting animals then cutting up food and such from other friends. Animals are not allowed in the food making area when food is being made. Cats might think they can go where they want but they are not allowed and learn or get locked up in the room with food and cat box. They then have learned. One use to watch from the door way and prance in when I said "done now"

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I love that you hold the line with animals and you don't subscribe to that fantasy that a lot of lazy pet owners do that you simply let them do what they want because they're pets.

No, they are highly intelligent, and they only do what you let them.

I simply would not allow my cats anywhere near my room, they would hover at the threshold when they wanted something but they knew shit's going to hit the fan if they set one foot in there.

And a dog from years ago, I loved her but I would not tolerate her being anywhere near me or begging when food came into the picture. I taught her through my consistent actions that she's going to be sent away. So she learned to sit near me but always look elsewhere. If she's so much as raised an eyebrow at me or turned towards me while I was eating, she got sent away.

It's really easy to train pets you just have to not be the laziest in the world which apparently is most owners.

I just lost both of my dogs last month but I always had zero problem with them being in the kitchen. I would never feed them though purposefully, although obviously food gets accidentally dropped and one of them would usually clean it up( I know that’s not really healthy for them obviously). They knew better than to ever beg for food during cooking or dining

Eh I don’t even know what point I was trying to even make here. I think I just miss my dogs.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 23 hours ago

Meh. Dogs are basically garbage disposals LOL

You probably did well just by not reinforcing the negative behaviors and letting them get their scraps

Sorry you miss your dogs

Opened their fridge and took a sip of ketchup straight from the bottle.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 day ago

When I would go to restaurants with my grandfather he would down all the available ketchup, cream, honey, jam packets, etc.

He grew up in the depression, and his attitude was if it was on the table, it's his to eat.

Yeah I watched him do a lot of shooters of keychup up in my life.

After cooking ground beef, rinsing it in a colander.

JFC. You strain the oil off it if there’s a lot but you don’t rinse it with water.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (7 children)

One of my ex girlfriends would wash her dishes without rinsing them. Ues soapy water to scrub them and just put them in the dish strainer.

Edit: spelling

I was shocked how common this was in the French Canadian community in Montreal when I lived there as a young man. The first time I saw it I just stood there blinking.
