No matter how you count it, Lemley is in the Michael Jordan/LeBron James realm of legal scholars, widely recognized as one of the greatest.

Glad someone who can get Zuck’s attention in a meaningful way is calling him out. It’ll likely have no effect on his shitty decisions, but it may have a useful effect on their legal issues. Woohoo!

Is piracy from reddit allowed? Link: https://www.reddit.com/r/VPNTorrents/comments/p6h7em/answered_why_you_do_need_portforwarding_for/

Many people look for a VPN with the primary goal of running Bittorrent. Sadly nearly equally many people have no idea what's important there and recommend a random popular VPN without port-forwarding. They know no better. These misguided 'recommendations' are all over this sub and r/piracy too. Explanation

> But it has been running fine without any port-forwarding for me!

If you are OK with your downloads failing in 10% of cases then continue as usual. If you don't want to miss a chance, here's a short explanation:

Bittorrent relies on your connection working both ways: to accept incoming and outgoing connections. Without port-forwarding: you may will see slower speeds, slower speed ramp up and if a torrent has very few online seeders you may run into a situation where you cannot connect to anybody at all - no download! Seeding is very hard without port-forwarding.

Normally home users cannot accept incoming connections due to NAT. This is always the case for proxies and VPNs, but some VPNs allow the assignment of a port that will always lead to your connected device (and to your client). Making outgoing connections is always technically possible but then you rely on the seed/peer to have their ports open! At least one side must be open. There's no way around.

A detailed explanation would be too long but you can ask in comments.

Is it safe (privacy-wise)? Decide for yourself, discussions also in comments

Opinion & TLDR: If a VPN tracked/logged you, they don't need port-forwarding to find you. On the other hand, it is possible that the no-log VPN is forced to disclose which account currently (at the time of request) has the port in question configured. So far without known precedents. I believe it's worth it, without seeding torrents would die. How to

Pick a VPN provider that supports port-forwarding. Here's a list I compiled last month.

Pick a client and force it to only ever use the VPN connection in settings (see screenshots). This is called IP/interface binding

In client settings set the "incoming port" to match the forwarded port from your VPN provider (also referred to as "local port")

Disable UPnP and other automatic configuration unless your VPN provider explicitly only works with UPnP.

You are set. Bon voyage at the calm seas!

Sometimes you also need to allow incoming connections to the client application in your firewall. EDIT: Examples

Explicit examples where port-forwarding will help establishing a connection:

Downloader, closed port <--- ---> Seeder, closed port: Tough luck!

Downloader, closed port ---> Seeder, open port: Instant!

Downloader, open port ---> Seeder, closed port: Bummer. Need to wait until Seed sees and connects back to you. Usually up to 30min (or tracker refresh time)

Downloader, open port <---> Seeder, open port: Instant! in either direction

I am writing these posts to form a complete guide for people to follow and set up everything. Next time I see someone recommending a trashy VPN, I'll send them here.

Hi all,

It's been a long... years at work and my brain is fried currently with no bandwidth to properly determine how to migrate a BTFRS array from unraid over to proxmox. I can see the array in proxmox and am able to mount it but now I cannot for the life of me figure out how to

  1. verify that the data is intact
  2. assign it to a storage pool for use in vm's
  3. view it within proxmox

I haven't touched proxmox in years after settling on unraid a while back, but am looking to move back to a non-unraid config.

Anyone here have experience with btfrs and proxmox? Any good links to a tutorial or video?

Thanks!

Game Piracy 101 (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

I was working on a comment to a general post asking how to start pirating games. I tried to submit it but then soon realized that the post was deleted by the moderators while I was working on the comment. So, here you go:

Yarr welcome to the ship. Three rules you must always follow, lest the empire tracks u and sinks ur ship. Penalties for piracy vary by region (in the US if the ISP receives letters from copyright lawyers too many times about your file sharing behavior, they can suspend your internet)

First thing is a bittorrent client. There is really only one true bittorent client, which is qBittorrent (https://www.qbittorrent.org/). Stay away from uTorrent, they aren't good anymore. Others like Transmission are good as well.

Second is a VPN. My personal favorite is hide.me, since they have a Wireguard VPN (see https://hide.me/en/wireguard-vpn) and port forwarding. A very important thing to do is to choose one with port forwarding.

Port forwarding is the ability to open ports through your VPN. Basically, it allows you to be seen by Seeders even with closed ports, so they can establish a connection with you. This usually dramatically increases your download rate initially (because seeders can sometimes connect with you even if they have closed ports, it'll just take a while). Also, it's good for seeding as well and it helps the swarm! Here is a more complete explanation: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/35669790

Another very pro tip is to bind your VPN to your torrent client. In qBittorrent, simply change Preferences -> Advanced -> Network Interface. (To know which one, go to your terminal and type "ifconfig" if you're on Linux or "ipconfig" if Windows. It will show you a list of all your network interfaces. Type this command two times, one with your VPN off and one with your VPN on, and whichever interface appears should be it)

Thirdly, come to a pirate site. There's fitgirl-repacks.site, or there's dodi-repacks.site. Download the installation folder and run the installation file.

Known as Xiaohongshu in China, RedNote is a social media platform that includes images, short-form videos, community building tools, shopping and more. It is not a one-to-one TikTok clone, and it is not owned by ByteDance. It is owned by Shanghai-based Xingyin Information Technology.

American TikTokers who fear losing the platform have suggested their followers join them in downloading RedNote to send a message to the U.S. government, as well as the social media company Meta, which stands to gain new users of its TikTok-like product, Reels, if the ban goes into effect. Meta reportedly used a Republican lobbying firm to spread ill will toward TikTok in 2022.

On Monday, RedNote was the top free-to-download app on the Apple App Store, followed by TikTok’s sister app Lemon8.

On TikTok, some videos of people joking about saying goodbye to their “Chinese spy” (some in Mandarin) have racked up millions of views and likes. The memes are part of a deeper resentment some users feel toward the U.S. government for moving to ban TikTok in the name of security and safety even though some lawmakers use it themselves, as well as toward the continued politicization of other social media companies, like X and Meta.

“I’m going to download it on my phone. I’m going to let it track other apps. I’m going to give it permission to see my location and all of my contacts and then I’m just going to let it sit there,” a TikTok user posted. “I’m going to let it sit there as a little window through which my personal Chinese spy can see everything that I’m doing.”

“Our government, I’m convinced, loves and thrives seeing us unhappy and seeing us struggle and seeing us poor,” another TikToker said. “Seeing that RedNote, another Chinese app, which is owned and hosted in China, is the No. 1 app in the App Store today is just beautiful.”

Experts noted that the law gives the executive branch the authority to deem a country a “foreign adversary” and that in doing so it can choose to ban an app that comes from that country. In this case, China is already deemed a “foreign adversary” in the TikTok ban, and therefore the executive branch could theoretically decide that other apps from China must be banned.

I recently came across this term Dynamic Lock Screen and I’m kind of curious about it. I’ve seen it mentioned here and there but I don’t fully get how it works or what it’s used for. From what I gather it seems like it’s something related to customizing your lock screen or making it more interactive? I’m not sure if it’s just for looks or if it has any cool features beyond that. is this something built into the system or do you need to install an app for it? And if anyone’s using it do you find it useful or just a gimmick? I’d love to hear your thoughts tips or even some tricks if you’ve got any. Just trying to figure out if it’s worth exploring.

I use an RSS reader to curate my Lemmy feed, which means I see every post, including deleted ones. Every so often, posts will crop up with pessimistic content such as "Why try anymore?" etc. Most of the time these are a result of privacy burnout, where the individual has a threat model that is too strict for their own tolerance.

We all wish we have perfect privacy. We all wish the world could be more pro-privacy than anti-privacy. One day, that may be the case. For now, we have to accept that nobody can be completely private. Privacy is a spectrum, and doing what you can to minimize data collection goes a long way. You can't become private overnight, so taking small steps like these means you can grow a strong foundation for future privacy. Privacy takes time, so take it as slow as you need to.

Even if a company already has your data or another means to track you, by minimizing you are making it harder for them to extract that data, and it increases the odds that your data becomes stale. By caring about privacy to begin with, you're showing companies and other people that the data collection is not ok.

I've been a privacy activist for years now, and I will also face periods of privacy burnout. I handle it by stopping, taking a step back, and reevaluating my threat model. It's good to take breaks like those, because it means you don't push yourself past your limits and become burnt out.

It's really easy to get caught up in the "breaking news" of privacy, too. This is more of a personal stance, but getting caught up in politics and news often leads to stress and makes it harder to make real progress. (This is one of the reasons I use an RSS reader, I can curate my information without stressful headlines.) You don't need to use the most private software or jump ship the moment anything goes wrong. If you feel you need to switch, do it when you have time and when it won't cause problems elsewhere.

Take a look at how far you've come, and realize that even if you're not where you want to be yet, you've taken steps to get there. Every person who starts to care about privacy, even you, is one more person to help make the world a more privacy respecting place. It may not seem like you make that much of a difference, but it's not just you. You and everybody else who cares about privacy makes a huge difference.

Don't give up now. Privacy is an uphill battle by design, but the payoff is worth it.

Good luck!

Last job killed my love of IT, management beat it out of me. Wonderful company, demotivated by my manager from the first week. Couldn't be a nicer guy, smartest tech I've ever met, Peter Principled his was into management.

Never been paid that much, took about every Friday off on PTO, total WFH, can't say what my benefits cost but it wasn't $100/mo. in total. My last job was half the pay and benefits, was so much happier. I think of that every time I read a comment about why companies need to pay more to satisfy us. Everyone should have a look at this. Had ALL that at my penultimate job, NONE at the most recent.

I feel so weird, especially at this time of life with a solid resume, interviewing for PT work at Lowe's. Thinking I'll be happier than a pig in shit spending 4 hours a day, just walking around helping people, doing what ever bullshit I'm asked to do. Looking to see how it goes, see if there are ways to work myself up to FT, better schedule, supervisor, whatever.

Thought about "retiring" to work in a hardware store to keep busy and fit, but not for a decade+. Excepting my credit card bills, and what my wife sends home to the Philippines, she makes enough to cover everything. Won't take much to take the edge off.

I love hardware and tools and plants, about everything they sell. Hoping to learn a lot as well. Helping people is really satisfying to me, and I'm excellent at handling customers. LOL, I'm best with the angry ones, sometimes get them apologizing. :)

Need a sanity check, am I losing it!? Been through the worst depression of my life the past few years, hoping this will break me back into a normal state of mind.

TikTok is reportedly planning a total shutdown of the Chinese-owned video-sharing app when the law requiring a ban or sale of the app takes effect on Sunday.

The roughly 170 million US users who try to access the app will be greeted with a pop-up message directing them to a website with details about the ban, according to the Information.

Users will also be given the option of downloading their data from the app, sources familiar with the plan told the outlet.

While Proton services are hosted in Switzerland which has the strongest privacy laws in the world and avoids the surveillance of NATO.
