News and Discussions about Reddit

Welcome to !reddit. This is a community for all news and discussions about Reddit.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules

Rule 1- No brigading.

**You may not encourage brigading any communities or subreddits in any way. **

YSKs are about self-improvement on how to do things.

Rule 2- No illegal or NSFW or gore content.

**No illegal or NSFW or gore content. **

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-Reddit posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

For further explanation, clarification and feedback about this rule, you may follow this link.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

Unless included in our Whitelist for Bots, your bot will not be allowed to participate in this community. To have your bot whitelisted, please contact the moderators for a short review.

Relay for Reddit app stays as one of the few remaining third party apps for Reddit and they are forced to go to a subscription model but the cost of such a subscription is related to how many API calls per user are done.

This screenshot was taken from the yet working patched Sync for Reddit app.

Resolved:

Reddit itself doesn't filter. Reddit HFY does.

It is not possible to link from Reddit HFY to Lemmy HFY directly due to shadow-filtering. The whole message with the link will be only visible for the creator. Working around with eg https://lemmy(dot)world/post/94994 though works as long as the user edits the link while copying it.

Does Reddit block Links to Lemmy.World?

I just wanted to post a link in a Reddit Answer. To my utter surprise the message was not shown to other people. I as the author could see it without any hint it would be invisible.

But everyone else couldn't see it. It just wasn't there, even an direct linkt didn't help. Editing the message didn't help either. I had to delete it and rewrite it without mentioning "lemmy.world" in the message.

Here is a workaround where I avoid a link and it works:

Reddit Post without Link Workaround

Reddit Post with Link

Edit 1: To make myself clear again, you should see at least one message without a link and one with a link to Lemmy. But you will only see the one without a link. The trigger seems to be the exact word “lemmy.world”. Is that a known problem?

Edit 2: Wow, this goes deeper. A fresh Edge browser does show the link post. A old Edge browser doesn’t. All browsers with strict privacy settings don’t show the link. Firefox in Private Mode and with Adblock doesn’t show it. Edge and Chrome in private mode don’t show it either. A fresh chrome doesn’t show it. An older Installation of Chrome does. Reddit is doing something very strange.

Edit 3: https://lemmy(dot)world/post/3375662 seems to bypass the filter. So it is true: Reddit filters their biggest competitor.

Edit 4: The Shadow-Ban doesn't seem to work on r/help but definitely on r/hfy.

Hi! I came here looking for an alternative to Reddit which is less of a liberal echo chamber. It looks good, even more responsive. But I wonder, how is the moderation here? Biggest problem I have with Reddit is that it is becoming increasingly impossible to have discussions about "sensitive topics". Even if you are being civil, there is a chance you will just straight out get banned for saying something which liberals do not like. How does Lemmy compare? Thanks.

I know will not be seen by many, but if someone wonders why my profile is dead, they know why. Link sends to join-lemmy.org, if I get banned, oh well...

I used to run a bot that searched for and posted about abandoned subreddits (subreddits without mods, or where the only mod was the admin-run "request_bot"). My database of abandoned (and banned) subreddits is about 1 million subreddits. I stopped posting the data to Reddit as part of the API protests. I was releasing about 100 randomly selected subreddits from the database a day.

I don't think I'm going to start releasing the data back on Reddit again, at least not for the forseeable future. Should I release it on Lemmy instead?

My database is uncensored, there's no feasable way to check 1M subreddits by hand, so it includes a lot of subreddit that are porn related.

It's like the dude who's come over to ask for money, making a low-effort attempt to be friendly first, and talk to you like he's your buddy.

Errors in the links ("Try our report form", "Better late than never", "Block user", maybe some others) were in the original. I triple-checked them because at first I thought my markdown translation was to blame. Nope.

Newsletter follows:

Why hello there!

Good morning or your regional equivalent everyone! We have a bunch of feathered (and fuzzy!) friends to share with you this month, as well as a delightful set of hands-on subreddits and a ton of on-site news and updates. Let’s get right to it.

Community Spotlight

r/hummingbirds

  • Do you have a backyard hummingbird feeder? Do you want to live vicariously through fellow redditors that do? For your daily dose of ruby-throated (and others!) goodness, hop by the r/hummingbirds community for feeder shots, how-to’s, and nest pics.

r/autoimmom

  • Read as: “Auto-immune mom,” a subreddit for parents (not just moms, though we do love a good pun here at Reddit) living with an autoimmune or chronic disease. Come laugh, vent, cry, or love with someone who’s been where you are!

r/owlsintowels

  • Exactly what it sounds like, r/owlsintowels is a sub dedicated to pics and videos of rescue owls in towels. They’re celebrating a 3,000 member milestone, so if you’re a who-rito fan… (get it? Owls say “who” and they’re wrapped…we’ll workshop it) or just need some more wholesome bird content on your feed, this sub is for you.

r/shmupdev

  • r/shmupdev is a subreddit dedicated to shoot-em-up game devs and connection to the shmup community! If you’re developing a shoot-em-up title or are a long time fan looking for the best indie gems, give r/shmupdev a sub!

r/furniturerepair

  • Have a coffee stain on your table? Did your cat leave bite marks in your chair? r/furniturerepair is the place for you! Whether it’s leather, metal, wood, marble, or more, this is the sub that’ll turn your furniture DIY into DI-Done. (This sub also comes highly recommended for those who like seeing things taken apart and put back together again.)

r/tbrzero

  • “To-be-read zero.” Do you have a shelf full of books that you’ve been telling yourself you’ll read…eventually? Sometime soon. When you’re not so busy. Tomorrow, for sure. r/tbrzero is a community dedicated to getting that “to be read” pile down to zero through encouragement, motivation, and advice on identifying books that maybe you won’t enjoy as much as the cover might suggest.

r/REWRabbits

  • A subreddit celebrating adorable Ruby-Eyed-White Rabbits! Hop on by if you’re thinking about adopting a pet rabbit, already an owner looking to connect with other long-eared fans, or looking for an extra dose of ruby-white sweetness in your day!

r/HyruleEngineering

  • A fast-growing subreddit showcasing the best (and worst) creations from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Did you make a speedboat? A quadcopter? A 1:1 scale gundam? Did you create a machine whose only function is transmuting inertia into contagious laughter? Come share your designs and yoink the ones you like for your own purposes!

r/Lighthouses

  • A growing subreddit dedicated to the history and exploration of lighthouses! Come fawn over the architecture and stories lighthouses the world over have to tell…or get some great ideas for stops on your next coastal walkabout!

Do you want to see your community featured in next month’s Snoosletter? Send a message here for consideration. If you don’t get highlighted one month, feel free to write in again, especially if you’re doing something special within your community that you want to share. Community events, milestones, good deeds, and moderation success stories are especially welcome.

One of the remaining 3rd party Reddit apps (Relay) has begun discussing what it would be charging for subscription fees. Imo, they actually seem somewhat reasonable. The weird thing is that every upvote or downvote is an API call so you can rack up a huge number of API calls from voting.

Also, while the costs might be reasonable now, there's nothing preventing Reddit from jacking up prices again.

Edit: Also, there wouldn't be any NSFW content with the app.

It used to be in the top 5 - 10 until r/place ended... "Infinity" is currently entry 154 and the only Reddit client to make it into the top 200...

To dampen the mood: no Lemmy client makes the top 200 either since Sync lost its hype...

Edit: Sry for the low image quality, I rescaled my screenshot to get it below the 100kb media upload limit of my instance and it looked fine in the gallery. I should have outsourced my upload...

An automod is making posts asking for moderators in subs where the mods have either been purged or left reddit on their own accord. The predictable result is a flood of copypasted applications from bots.

According to an r/modcoord post this subreddit was another one where the admins wholesale removed the current mod team and now they are looking for replacements.

How convenient these tech problems are.

Sorry, we cannot delete your account because... checks notes... technical problems.

Seems to me that the Fediverse is closest thing now that's working on accomplishing his dreams. His ideals leveraging technology to create a voice for people...

RIP.

Hi, I requested reddit for my data and I got 16Mb of CSVs... which is a considerable amount. Do anyone know of any tool to process / visualize / search ... the data. I asume the format is the same for everyone, so maybe someone has already built something like that.

EDIT: the problem is not performance, with files <5Mb I can search with notepad++ in miliseconds. What I'm looking for is a user friendly interface (ideally with thumbnail images, links and such).

The problem with searching for "reddit export data visualizer" is that Google shows posts from reddit about visualization of generic data.

Thanks.

Notice there is only 1 full headline (from /r/NoStupidQuestions) visible, it doesn't even show the full post. There are 3 of those "trending" boxes but only 2 of those even fit their headlines because they are like 3 words long, they cut off anything longer including the description

I originally became addicted to Reddit because of how streamlined it was to skim dozens of headlines and pick from lots of content, seems they have decided content is not something they want to provide anymore :/

So I mean, most of us knew this beforehand and being on the fediverse we probably do not really care, but what was always on the horizon has no happened, the owner of Squabblr finally had enough having to be a decent person and has decided that his site is now "free speech purism", so he gets to continue to insult LGBTQ people like he always does.

Seems from the comments that some other admins disagreed with the decision (so there were some decent people on that site!) and either left or were removed.

Not entirely surprising the whole thing, granted.

(edit)
Also, apologies as this isn't truly reddit news but Squabblr was one of the sites frequently brought up in /r/redditalternatives so I figured this might still be relevant?

Was just banned from Reddit because I dared to use Tor (which I am using rn) and comment something. Since my account was new the mod banned me, I have 1k other reddit accounts, so not knowing I was banned, I posted in the same community with other accounts, thus three accounts are permanently banned.

Now, I made a resolve to not go back to Reddit and instead use Forums and Lemmy. Now, how do you navigate lemmy? I mean, I know how, but are there any communities to help me navigate Lemmy, like an equivalent for reddit's r/findareddit and others which you have found to be interesting.
