No matter what I do, it's like Gboard is specifically avoiding it. It'll instantly learn any bullshit word I make up like "aprifnid" but can't type "Lemmy". I suspect shenanigans.

Lemmy lemmy lemmy. Lemmy. Kenny Kent lent

lemmy lemmy lemmy.

Lemmy lemmy lemmy lemmy lemmy lemmy

Lines in italics were typed, lines not in italics were swiped, bold was swiped then selected from the suggested word list. It took a little bit but I managed to train it to do it.

We need you in my QA department.

Lemmy

Nope for me it works, I'm using the openboard fork with gesture typing

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Is that a privacy focused alternative? Where's the APK?

Worth pointing out that openboard doesn't support gesture typing. The fork I believe @[email protected] is talking about is:

https://github.com/erkserkserks/openboard/releases/tag/v1.4.5-gesture-typing

I use this one.

This is the official package that is now unmaintained, I use the fork of one of the original devs: https://github.com/Helium314/openboard

It supports adding an external swipe type library, and sadly the only working one is the gboard one, that works like a charm however

It is not on fdroid (yet), so you can install it manually or using obtainium

lemme lemmy lemmy lemmy lemmy, yeah seems like it works for me.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

I can't really try because I've set up the lemmyface to show up whenever I type lemmy by swiping. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I deleted "Kenny" and now it seems to do it fine if I double boop the M.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

My first try yielded "Kelly" but was about to get "Lemmy" on my second try. I recommend trying to touch the space to the right of the "L".

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

Lemmy

Holy shit, it worked!! Took 3 tries though.

Lenny Lemme Lemmy, got it :D

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Just to confirm you're not crazy, I tried the standard method of adding a word by manually typing 'lemmy' and then tapping the same word on the suggestion bar, which didn't work.

Tested adding other nonsense words like treypses which worked as expected for swyping, but to get Lemmy to work I had to add Lemmy in Gboard's personal dictionary

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago

Adding to the various dictionaries didn't work for me, but this guy's suggestion did! https://lemmy.world/comment/6948861

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

Worked for me after about 3 uses.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

My attempts: Kent Lenny Lemmy Lenny Lemmy lemmy.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Swipe for lemmy works fine here, but I've tap-typed it a lot.

Lemmy

First! And I actually did quite poor...

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Works for me. Make sure you scribble on the M while you're over it.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Is that a thing? I've noticed better results with some words when I make sure I make a hard turn or pause on a letter.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago

Both are indeed things.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Lemmy Lemmy Lemmy Lemmy

I'd a circle on the 'm'

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Lemmy Lemmy Lemmy

Yep

Am I using this place incorrectly, or is it just kind of dead? There doesn't seem to be much activity, or else maybe I don't know where to look yet. I really wanted it to replace reddit.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago

Go to lemmyverse.net and load up your subscriptions with more active communities, and I'll bet you will barely notice that reddit is gone aside from less/slower (but better IMO) content and lower upvote counts.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

I'd recommend sticking around a bit and subscribing to more places. A lot of people have been able to replace Reddit (and waste similar amounts of time here)

My tips are

  • Subscribe to more communities. After searching for something on LemmyVerse, if you find 3 communities that might be interesting, subscribe to them all.

    • On Reddit, a community with low subscribers is usually dead. On Lemmy, there is a lot more engagement on the content so even the dead looking community will give you interesting content over time
  • Feel free to comment and post more. People are more likely to respond here

It isn't a 1 to 1 perfect copy of Reddit, it's different :)

You can also pop in to [email protected] to ask questions or say hi :)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

My advice is try "Hot" sort and "Top Day" (or 6/12 hours depending on how you like to check). And set the scope to "All" instead of "Local".

The default Active sort has always been kind of meh to me. Hot is more like Reddit's Rising feed.

Try Sync for Lemmy.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Works here. I can never get it to swipe type "Mastodon" though.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

Mastodon

First try.

I've learned that pausing a bit on letters helps and also extending a bit further past the ones on the ends.
