And Lemmy wouldn't let me post the original 4096x3072, image too big, so I had to crop it. Take it up with Lemmy devs.

I don't think the warning meant it was too large literal size of image, but the size of the file.

Well cropping it shouldn’t change the actual resolution, so if that’s all you did then you might be out of luck. My assumption was the image was resized or compressed somehow. If it’s just a bad picture to start with then it’s probably not possible to identify.

And yes, comparing the original to what I posted, it does appear that somewhere along the upload chain that it did get compressed more. Original ain't much better, but it's like twice as clear.

I was unable to get my phone camera to focus any closer than like 6 inches or so away. Sigh, I tried, oh well.

Ah I understand what you were saying now. Yeah unless it’s a macro lens most cameras have difficulty with very small, close objects. Maybe some insect expert can make out enough detail from this image but I think it’s probably not possible.
