If you think Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were good for the world then I don't know what to tell you.

The FSF isn't exactly what you think of when you hear the words "large tech company"… but you could argue that in some ways it is one couldn't you… 😁😛

This is hardly programmer humor… there is probably an infinite amount of wrong responses by LLMs, which is not surprising at all.

There are physical reasons why cameras need some horizontal space to achieve good image quality. You need to fit lens elements in there to get sharp images. It's really already a miracle that phone manufacturers have managed to fit such good cameras into that space by now.

Most people don't have a good eye for good image quality. I take a lot of photos as a hobby (mostly with real cameras, but occasionally also phones) and I can definitely tell that my phone photos have been getting a lot better over the years as I got newer smartphones.

The more obscure a web page is, the more likely it is to be indexed only by the large search engines (i.e. Google). There are search queries that return 0 results on DDG, but quite a few (relatively) obscure websites on Google. This is simply because the more money a search engine operator has, the more websites it will index.

So what you want is kind of contradictory.

If you, a potential voter, are reading something, then people trying to win an election will try to put information that will influence your opinion into those sources you are reading.

  • Google: plenty of other search engines exist right now, if this argument had been about gmail or Android, I could have understood it better
  • Facebook: yeah we can tell this was written before the rise of the fediverse because the solution there is completely obvious to anyone reading this...
  • Amazon: maybe because of its cloud services? In terms of e-commerce Amazon is literally just one online shop out of many, I at least do not buy from Amazon especially more often than other online shops.

social media will be another tool to manufacture consent, break up movements, and preserve itself over the interest of the governed.

it already is that, or did you miss the stories about Biden administration officials meeting with Facebook, TikTok etc about "content moderation"?

hint: moderation is different from censorship

If that were true, Disney and similar companies should be lobbying for the abolition or at least weakening of copyright, which we can tell isn't the case.

Abolish copyright

[–] [email protected] 15 points 2 months ago

Honestly it is less severe than speeding. Copyright was an invention of the pre-digital era. Now that we all use computers, so many things we do every day are technically copyright infringement that it is absurd to even have these kinds of conversations.
