He won’t listen. The only way to get them is through the pocketbook, don’t go to any AI slop movies.

I'm sure I won't be tempted. It's damn hard to get me into a theater these days as it is.

TLDW? bald denier fuck tells world his ai slop is amazing, its not, and AI created to reduce/remove/simplify artistic jobs will somehow not remove or reduce said jobs. because ai star wars slopp is what we alllllll want. oh and no real voice actors... or actors for that matter. sign here, and here. and by reading this comment aloud disney now owns the rights to your voice/likeness in perpetuity. yada yada yada

also over 10k dislikes for those without the addon

As a biologist and fan of SciFi/speculative evolution, having it be AI is one issue, but the bigger problem to me is the lack of creativity. They're literally just obvious mixups of two earth animals? Cmon, let's have more imagination here!

I just tested with Gemini "Make an image of an alien creature that is a mix of a crustacean and squid, but with fur, climbing up a purple tree. there are lianas and vines falling down around it with orange flowers"

This is absolutely foul and should be denounced. Holy shit what trash. This dude doesn't have a creative bone in his body.

I think were getting a little to quick to the trigger in shitting on AI. I dont see any problem in what I saw watching the Ted talk. I didn't watch every minute of it but what I saw for what the article is calling AI slop seemed like viable use of AI to create fictional creatures.

This is ILM, though, considering what they’ve accomplished in the past with hands-on tools, for the current chief creative officer to embrace AI so wholeheartedly, and for the result to just be “animal crossed with animal”, it’s pretty disappointing

Seriously the AI generated creatures were weak bullshit. Maybe they mostly looked good, but none of them evoked anything actually alien, which was the supposed point.

From the perspective of a person from this very industry - the examples are at a level of a 10-yo. And the execution is absolutely terrible, even not conisdering it's from ILM.

Might look like any other "CGI" to people from outside the industry, but it absolutely is slop.

Watched the whole thing. He had some valid points, especially where full permission from the talent is concerned. The "field guide" models were pretty uninspired, but they did a good job showcasing what is possible.

I have mixed feelings. Using AI responsibly is the ideal goal, but we have seen that this is largely not going to be the case both now and moving forward.

new technology is never used responsibly

business owners only care about minimizing costs and cornering control of new tech

history is full of examples

look at the industrial revolution, the tech will win but society isnt better in all ways

and this really isnt looking star treck so much as black mirror

look at the genetic testing fad, it was mostly a scam.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

This shit's just sad. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 days ago

If what they are creating is like the thumbnail, they're doing it wrong.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I think this speaker was fair in following up the video, which he made very clear was just a demo for getting ideas, with the notion that real artists are still needed.

The gen AI stuff we have now is only going to get better. Think about early CGI stuff like Toy Story and then think about Avatar. People are going to use these tools to create things, it won’t replace creativity, yet.

Everybody chill and enjoy the ride you old farts.
