This could be said by a us president today not by accident and probably not even make the news.

Nah, people would be ecstatic to hear a US president say that today Edit: except maybe the Poles

True. The masses really would. . I'd prefer to never hear from him again though.

Is there a way to say you're a "Berliner" or can you only say "from Berlin"?

[–] [email protected] 15 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

That’s technically what he said, but a donut called krapfen is also very commonly called a Berliner. I am from Berlin (Ich komme aus Berlin) is the more common way to say it.

So he wasn’t really wrong, so much as it was funny colloquially.

Actually there are many words for this specific German kind of donut. Krapfen is common, where I live it's Kreppel. Since it's arguably the Berlin way of pancake (Berliner Pfannkuchen), in Berlin it's just called Pfannkuchen and in some spaces it's called Berliner.

You can say Berlinican, Berlinese, or Berlinish.

You won’t be right but you can say them.

People from Berlin call themselves Berliners, nobody thinks they mean the donut.

What was he trying to say?
