Literally seen more whining about politics than I've seen politics.

[–] [email protected] 32 points 1 year ago

Well... technically speaking: Isn't "whining about politics" still "politics"?

If we follow that rabbit hole, OP has contributed to the exact issue they are ranting about.

Does your instance federate with Hexbear and Lemmygrad? Because I constantly have those people in my feed and it's absolutely exhausting. I see more memes about burning the rich and starting a revolution than normal memes in my feed. I'm left-wing, but I'm not looking at memes to constantly be confronted with politics. Unfortunately instance blocking isn't working well for me yet

I'm glad for you, please let me know what instance you're on

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Your instance doesn't affect what you see, except in cases of de-federation.

Make your own instance with the politics you want.

There is no such thing as non-political spaces, only spaces where everyone has pre-agreed on what politics are acceptable.

[–] [email protected] 30 points 1 year ago (1 children)

There is no such thing as a non-political discussion either! ;) everything is politics in some sense

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Average comment: "I'm glad to see more female engineers. Historically they have been disfranchised."

MFers like OP: "Why would you bring politics into this?"

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

There are only two genders: man and political!

[–] [email protected] 55 points 1 year ago (5 children)

I am wary of people using an unspecified "politics tho" like this. More than once the """PoLiTiCs""" they meant were LGBTQIA+ people simply existing.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Honestly I never got why LGBT+ is even a political thing. It’s just basic human rights. But probably my opinion will be seen as politics by some.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That was my point. It's NOT political. The right is just using their existence as a scape goat.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

Everything is political. This is why human rights get attacked by politicians.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 year ago

If there are two or more people, there are politics. I agree with the idea that people who decry ‘politics’ often have disgusting ideas and beliefs. Its a malignant form of privilege to pretend to be able to ignore politics. It’s either that or they are just a little dim and don’t feel they can keep up in a conversation.

Almost everything conceivable has a political angle of some sort.

What people that complain about politics generally mean is "politics that they notice that make them uncomfortable."

[–] [email protected] 24 points 1 year ago (1 children)

"marginalized folks? Grrrrrrrr!"

[–] [email protected] 23 points 1 year ago

"Why can't there be normal people in my treats that don't have political issues visibly affecting their lives?" grill-broke

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

No, they mean you fuckers thinking outright political posts are memes.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Underrated comment

[–] [email protected] 28 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I wish people would stop using "politics" as a buzzword for every bit of news they don't care to hear about.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 year ago (2 children)

News is fine.

It's when people start screaming/blaming the "left" or "right", the "biden" or "trump", etc.

Extra annoying when I am not even fucking American and have to hear Americans scream about your old senile corpses you call presidents in EVERY FUCKING POST.

Extra extra annoying when I am reading a news article about my country, and Americans roll in screaming about how that's "bidens fault" or "illegal in montana". Learn to fucking read where you are.

But then again, According to a 2020 report by the U.S. Department of Education, 54% of adults in the United States have English prose literacy below the 6th-grade level.

I havent seen anyone talk about politics on programming.dev

[–] [email protected] 22 points 1 year ago

Thank you, we'll get right on it.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago

That's right.

But only because "Vim vs Emacs" is a technically a religious holy war.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

Nothing but holy wars there.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 year ago (10 children)

I'm immediately suspicious of people that don't want to discuss politics in today's world. You literally have to be a carefree ostrich.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

I guess not wanting to discuss it is okay considering that's exhausting, but asking others not to is the dick move

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not really. I want to kick back and relax, why would i start discussing politics in my free time? I live in a state that is deeply entrenched in one side, so my opinion does not really matter

Arguing politics online has never solved anything. I have better uses of my energy than to argue politics with a bunch of faceless randoms that won't accept anything less than total conformity.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Politics in a political or news sub is fine. Politics in, say, a technology sub or a gaming one is just annoying.

I block a lot of folks. It's nice.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well lemmy has a left lean and it's currently small enough for it to spill into other communities.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I lean to the left myself. But it’s just nice to have a break every once in a while.

I think it's the world that's been taken over, not by politics, but by a series of rich bastards not being held accountable for the crimes against society they're regularly committing.

But either way I'd be MUCH happier to wish for all the porn to be removed from my feed when I dont even follow a single porn based sub. Or at the very least make sure it's blurred.

Seems to me lemmy needs a bigger downvote button

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Not seen this yet, tbh. Politics in fact seem a rather rare topic outside of the US-centric posts?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I meant taken over, but can’t change it now on mobile
