A guy born on third base telling us how to score a run.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 7 months ago (1 children)

He's right, though - unless there are real legal repercussions or it's an impossible task, just say "yes". Worst case scenario, you'll do a bad job of it and whoever requested your service won't do it anymore.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 7 months ago

also if there aren't legal repercussions but you're still endangering people by fucking it up, please don't :)

Right. This is what I see in the quote. No one, in my entire life, has ever simply offered me an amazing opportunity. I’ve had to apply, interview, fight for that opportunity.

Who is getting opportunities handed to them they’re not qualified for? What world does this guy live in?

One where he's sociable and learnt to get along with people. You'd be surprised how often it works.

[–] [email protected] 40 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

or in other words...

"fake it 'til you make it"

[–] [email protected] 19 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Or for more desperate situations "flail it til you nail it"

[–] [email protected] 5 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Or in certain contexts "fuck shit up and pray it works"

Good gosh even when it's not DNS....

.... IT'S DNS

[–] [email protected] 22 points 7 months ago

that explains a lot honestly

I get it, but I hate it. It's not in my nature to lie like that. I can "lie" for the sake of humor or something, like using misdirection or "acting," but when it's an honest situation I can't help but be honest.

Not that I have opportunities tossed my way that often lol

[–] [email protected] 10 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

I hate it but it's how these things go. You only had a 3 week internship at school because that's what your school does at the end of your semester as a requirement for graduating? That's fine, on your resume that becomes "Spring 2024", people don't need to know it was only 3 weeks, they can think it was 3 months unless they explicitly ask you how long it was which they usually don't. It helped me land my first dev job years ago, it sucks but it works.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Exactly. In jobs they will find out if you lied about possessing skillset they require, especially if it's a critical one.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I can do it, but if it's like a small lie. I know something similar, where the learning part is very small and I'm not lacking any core knowledge.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Fake it till ypu make it? :p

The amount of posts regarding "I have no idea how I landed in this position. Please help me" are in the double digits. for a recent timeframe.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago

Sure, fake it, but a small part. I'm not talking about lacking core knowledge.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 7 months ago (2 children)

That's why he's still a RIO lol

Professional backseat driver

Radar Intercept Officer

The guy who sits in the back seat of the F14 and operates the radio and radar.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 7 months ago

Yeah I think most people miss the real point of this joke

[–] [email protected] 7 points 7 months ago

This is funny but he should be passed out

[–] [email protected] 6 points 7 months ago

In the sense of this meme it's actually true. An airforce recruiter comes to you with the opportunity to be a fighter pilot you take the offer first. You clear medical, they send you to basic, then flight school, then you learn to be a fighter pilot. At no point before they sign you up do they have any requirements of needing to know how to fly.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 7 months ago

Yeah it's a joke but probably how the Russian air force works

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

I did reply once this phrase to a boss of mine, and I used a commercial pilot as an example...

I also told him that, I would kill everyone on board if i did such a thing.

😅🤣

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Offer revoked. Shitty attitude.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago

If in your kind of job you atitudes put a at risk peoples lives, you have to have training to executing a specific job, and can't go i always say i can do it, so this quote is not aplided to every situation, my job is a exemple of this, so no, i did not agree with my boss, and put my foot on the ground.

We have to be aware of what we do.
