I actually had this conversation with my partner the other day.

Me: "Are you still afraid of flying?"

Them: "Yeah, why do you ask?"

Me: "Oh, just to let you know that at this point it's a completely justified position."

Honestly, a national conversation about how environmentally damaging planes are in general should have already happened. I can only hope this kills the aviation industry and relegates it to international travel. The fact that we're not headlong into bullet trains criss-crossing the country is a fucking travesty.

Oh my poor summer child. I want to hold you and protect you from all the terrible things you are going to learn.

Oh, I know. Boeing is more of a military company than an aviation company, really. The US govt will do anything to keep the bombs and bombers flowing.

Further, even if it killed commercial aviation, it would just push more of the obscene rich to buy private planes.

A guy can dream, tho.

This seems like a good time to mention that if you live in the US, there's currently a significant amount of federal money up for grabs to expand the rail network, with an emphasis on high speed rail. See if there are any projects being planned in your state, and make your voice heard so NIMBYs and airline industry cronies don't bully us out of a vastly superior mode of inter-city transit.
