For background, this post on db zero provides background on what is going on.

Lemmy.world had to shutdown a community and temporary restrict signups, other instances have purged image caches, and dbzer0 is using a scanner to prevent images from being uploaded if the get flagged.

I just noticed when I go to hexbear communities on lemmy.sdf.org that most of the posts are missing. Is this some federation decision I missed or a technical issue?

3

I don't know if it's just me, but I've been unable to comment on any lemmy.world communities for several days now. I have even verified that lemmy.world was up and running, but it didn't help. I presume that there's some federation problem, likely on their end. My solution for now will have to be to unsubscribe from all lemmy.world communities and look for alternatives elsewhere, unless anyone has any better ideas.

Hey @[email protected] , just tried out the Instagram import feature. Looks like it will ingest the Instagram data but will not process it. Looks like import is only available to admins? Can we all get it? Or make it an ARPA tier or something?

Hi,

Since this morning, CSS won't work on lemmy.sdf.org

Example : https://lemmy.sdf.org/css/themes/litely.css

Error: ENOENT: no such file or directory, stat '/home/lemmy/0.18.0/lemmy-ui/dist/assets/css/themes/litely.css'

Surely SDF doesn't advertise? False positives?

This happens every time I open a thread. This started today. This hasn't happened before now. What's going on?

(not sure if this is the right community, sorry)

Hi, someone posted this on another server. I'd like to request we defederate with rammy.site and exploding-heads.com as well. I scrolled through some of their posts and comments and it's full of ridiculous anti-left propaganda, for example a post where some liberal Florida family fleeing the state when some child protection laws got passed, implying liberals abuse children and won't live in a state that doesn't allow them to. Just take a look for yourself.

" Admins of Lemmy.ml please consider defederating from rammy.site it has been taken over by right wing malicious actors from exploding-heads.com and the admin is nowhere to be found.

It is imperative that you take action as soon as possible the users on rammy are using the site to spread their messages to a further audience, we must nip this in the bud. If you don't believe me check the instance for yourself, you'll see it dominated with bigoted right wing posts and spam communities."

Edit: So many commenters think this is about political opinions or disagreement. It's not. If I said "Mixing bleach and ammonia is good for you" I bet some of you would call that a political disagreement.

It looks like when logged in, instead of loading comments, it gives a 500 error in the comment box.

Edit: It looks like they fixed it. Thank you @SDF!

I wanted to tag SDF today. A #sdf came up, but it seems to refer to something(s) different. I also saw a #sdfdotorg.

Is there a tag that's sort of "standard" to refer to SDF? Standard in the sense that it's typically used by ~~SDF members~~ [Edit:] Mastodon users interested in SDF.

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, I think someone is attempting a takeover of sdf-eu.org by social engineering.

A user named wheel is posting on bboard that smj has passed away, with a link to an obituary as well as a bunch of extremely unhinged stuff about soviets, russians, and smj owing them money?

Quarum Topic: After smj, founder of sdf, a computer people related
community, with free public unix/linux (netbsd currently), as the first
black man to produce such, proving such, died, crappy soviet wiggers tried
to steal his work, priviteising to their collection of public access
servers, disabled, used for illegal phishing purpose. http://is.gd/sdf_smj
Since all members of sdf could have easily sided with me instead of stupid
soviet pirates getting deported, ..I might redo sdf completely, seeing as
how, none of you were and still aren't on his side, and all have TOS
violations on record, setting all of your *:* to *:new and you're
directories 000 ... not sure just what else yet,.. ..but as for the really
ugly soviets working against smj's work, and every work, as wigger pirate
tend to,... Vote.. (actually I don't really believe you have much of a say,
but lets see how you feel?

smj died oweing me money and services, soviets deleted my account and tried
to steal sdf. [o;-)

There's more, since the user is new, it is highly likely that it is a joke, but I want to be cautious and throw out a warning in case it is not.

This is text body. Unfortunately, the create post button doesn't work. You have to navigate directly to old.lemmy.sdf.org/submit_post

I noticed that lemmy.world and slrpnk.net host old.lemmy.world and old.slrpnk.net and I was wondering if there was any interest in doing that here. Personally, I think it meshes with the SDF vibe.

Edit: this would be in addition to regular Lemmy

Edit 2: it looks like they added it at old.lemmy.sdf.org. Thank you @[email protected]!

Summary:

Hey, y'all!

  1. Do you know how I can check to see if my SDF Mastadon account request got approved or not?
  2. Is this even the right community to ask this question, or is there a better one I should use?

Details (Mastadon account question):

I applied for an account on SDF's Mastadon instance (https://mastodon.sdf.org/) about two weeks ago, and I know the account has to be approved before I can use it and that the folks approving accounts probably have a huge backlog to work through.

I haven't heard anything back for a couple of weeks, so today I tried to log in to see if the account works. I got an "Invalid E-mail address or password" error, but it did let me go through the reset password flow.

However, after I reset the password and tried to log in with the new one, I got the same "Invalid E-mail address or password" error. (I carefully checked to make sure I was copying the same password in for the reset flow and the login flow to make sure I didn't just fat-finger it.)

Obviously, my account does not seem to be active. Should I take from this that I'm still waiting for an approval decision, or does this mean my request was denied and I should look for another Mastadon instance to join?

Either way is cool and no hard feelings, I'm just not sure how to interpret it!

Details (right community question):

I'm posting here because I think my question relates to SDF policy (did SDF approve my Mastadon account request or not), but it's also a tech support question. I couldn't find a community on this instance that seemed geared for tech support on these sorts of issues, but I might have missed something.

Please let me know if there's a better place for this post, and I'll move it over! (I don't think Lemmy admins can move a post, but I was thinking of deleting and reposting in whatever community you guys suggest.)

The end

Cheers and thanks for everything the SDF is doing to welcome dorky fedivese newbies such as myself! :-D

I'm using a selfhosted version of MLMYM, which has a demo instance running at mlmym.org. I can't seem to log in, both on my self-hosted version and the demo site. A lemmy.world account of mine does work, however. Am I maybe getting caught in some bot filter?

I joined SDF very recently, and today I took a closer look at its logo. ...That's Macross! Exciting childhood memories come to mind, with engaging background music. Exhilarating!

Is there somewhere I can read about SDF's logo? I checked the FAQ, maybe not thoroughly enough, but didn't find anything.

While refreshing my memories about Macross I read that it was named Super Dimension Fortress – now I see the connection :)

To whoever designed that logo: you're on my "inspiring people" list now. Genius.

is anyone else having federation issues for kbin 'magazines'?

I've been subscribed to m/mma for a month and posts/comments do not come over to lemmy in a timely manner (or at all in some cases)

I'm not sure if the issue is on the lemmy side or the kbin side so I don't even know where to check or submit an issue

I'm having difficulty replying to the comment in my post https://lemmy.sdf.org/post/745908 .

This was my first attempt at replying to a comment (I just had my first success creating a top-level comment on a post -- not sure if/how that's different)

Not sure if the problem I'm running into is because of my web-browser or system (Linux desktop), or because of something about the nature of the comment I'm trying to reply to (appears to originate in Mastodon-land).

Any ideas? Maybe someone feels like trying to respond to the comment and give me a "Works For Me" response?

Edit: It seems to work just fine in this post. Still interested if someone other than me could try replying in the other thread/post.

I prefer browsing by RSS feed. I can get a sorted-by-new RSS feed of any Lemmy community easily, and it is very useful. However, if I click through a post because I am interested, it takes me to that community's instance, which means I am not logged in to their instance (because I am logged in only to SDF). Hence I cannot easily comment.

To solve this, I need to go back to our SDF instance, find the external community through our portal, then re-find the post I found interesting. This makes me a much more passive consumer of Lemmy content, which isn't bad in a lot of ways, but ya know, sometimes I want to contribute a little comment here and there.

Anyone know of a way around this?

I could stop using RSS, but RSS is too powerful a part of my Internet consumption workflow to give up now.

I signed up for SDF Pixelfed and never recieved an activation email. Is it possible the emailer is down?

23

The SDF mastodon instance "social" is throwing errors for me, is this a known thing?

24

There is some information about a vulnerability in the Lemmy frontend.

So I have questions for the SDF mods and admins.

  • Has this affected our instance in any way?
  • Has the fix been applied to our frontend?

Or is our instance like the Elusive Joe, and we're not so big yet that we're worth hacking?

It's fixed now! Old and pinned threads now show up all the time

For communities that gather or archive content, it's not great for old threads to disappear, unless a different sort mode is selected. Active sort (the default) hides old threads and it's not immediately obvious to the potential visitor that there is more to be found by changing the sort mode.

This also affects pinned threads, that are simply invisible, unless somebody recently participated in them.
