To expand, their policies were harmful and we're still dealing with the consequences of them

  • "trickle-down" policies, which widened income inequality and increased national debt

  • initial inaction during the AIDS crisis made the epidemic and stigma a lot worse. It's only recently that we're starting to effectively deal with the illness

  • "War on Drugs" got worse under Reagan, with mass incarceration that disproportionately affected minority communities. Also the "Just Say No" campaign oversimplified the issue instead of addressing the underlying causes. Again, we're only now starting to shift those policies into something that's more productive

I remember seeing that they did have a fediverse account? This seems related to that

Yup see here:

It's also in the article linked above:

Luckily, the creators of the NERV App, Gehirn Inc, have created an app-based alternative for users to get information in real-time, as well as running a Mastodon account.

Worse than spam, spam at least has a point to it.

Ehh, it's very clearly labeled for what the purpose is and it's also easy to block (if someone is using the NEW feed and is affected by the volume of posts).

Some people want the functionality of the bot and a big part of the Fediverse is to bring control of a platform back to the user. Lemmit is providing that functionality the right way

Removing options, gatekeeping

There's some nuance here too

Say barriers on bridges and high areas that the public can access. It's removing an option yes, but it might be enough friction to stop the person till they can receive the help they need

That assumes that the person was going to die regardless, while in reality lots of people can and do get the support that they need. This is different from medically assisted dying.

Hiding information doesn't help, but encouraging support and controlling the market for the poisons can help.

"Suicide is a sin" isn't the only reason we support those dealing with the issues, even if that might be the motivation of people in some places.

Great advice, and thank you for answering the question :)

OP understands the risks, and they're asking for tips on how to mitigate them if they have to make an account.

A lot of the comments here either missed or intentionally ignored the post body... Or the downvotes on the comment with a personal account saying how single women can feel safer if they can learn about a new person before meeting them.

People have different circumstances and perspectives :)

My advice for the original post:

  • Joining: You don't have to join everything at once, figure out what you might need. This also depends on where you are because different platforms are popular in different places. LinkedIn is one of the few that are helpful in my area.
    • You can also start with Fediverse platforms if you prefer, but if you're trying to connect with specific people that might not help
    • An alternative getting your name published on articles or blogs to fill up the search results
  • Usage: Do spring cleaning constantly. It's a big task if you try to clean your feed all at once, and it'll be easier for you to do it from the start. When you don't like something/someone, unfollow or mute. You can do it in a way that the other person won't know, if that's important. A lot of the problems of social media can be avoided if you maintain your feed.
  • I'll add more if I can think of them, good luck!

I think it can help to have some presence, even if it is to control what information comes up when someone looks you up.

Huh not sure how I missed that, thanks!

Even I don't install random apps if they aren't on the playstore or fdroid

I think they're being sarcastic, but it's annoying in its own way to repeat the lines that barely anyone actually believes

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

I think rather than either or, it just ranks things differently and doesn't give the best results.

I also remember during the height of COVID, antivax people were saying to use DDG because their random blogs and conspiracy YouTube videos were closer to the top compared to google.

I'm also not sure if transmitting x-rays would work

It's not like radar, you'd need to also be on the other side to collect the data after it passed through the object
