Yes, already have. It seems they don't care.

Well, I am asking also security wise. I know most schools snoop. Can they somehow see traffic through ssh or VPN? Or just the protocols, logs, dates, etc

It is my own device, but yes utilities and security is their own.

I have a server in my school office. I currently only use it to backup important files. I am asking if running public or private containers on it would be safe and acceptable.

Obviously if public the material would be important. But private, only over ssh or vpn? Free internet, power, and backup!

Great point about IoT

My understanding is that scrappers check every domain and subdomain. You’re making it harder but not impossible. Everything gets scrapped

It would be better if you also did IP whitelisting, rate limiting to prevent bots, bot detection via cloudflare or something similar, etc.

I was auto banning all countries but my own but now I’m hosting one resource that has an audience including Chinese…

Good advice outside of this use case! :)

Anything else?

Inspired by this comment to try to learn what I'm missing.

  • Cloudflare proxy
  • Reverse Proxy
  • Fail2ban
  • Docker containers on their own networks

Another concern I have is does it need to be on a separate machine on a vlan from the rest of the network or is that too much?

Thanks!

Mailbox.org is a commonly recommended service beside Tuta and Proton. I was going to switch from Proton to Tuta to have more custom domain emails but it doesn’t allow service outside of its apps. Mailbox.org is cheaper and allows 50 custom domains :)

That’s not how web scrappers work lol. No such thing as obscurity except for humans

I quickly quit them because they don't do IMAP for "security" reasons, ie walled garden, and their support requires you paying. After canceling my membership I literally couldn't contact support unless I paid again.

I was using protonmail for my custom domain for work and private emails but now I think mailbox has better options, providing way more custom domain emails. Wondering what the best use case is? Thinking of using my own domains instead of proton. I have this one and my name.

Using [email protected] or [email protected] is fun and easy but is it private? These companies already know my name so is using my work website domain okay?

Current emails

  • my methods have been:

  • use trilium for any detailed notes and documentation

  • memos for random thoughts especially if shorter

  • pen and paper when offline or on mobile because mobile trilium and moememos both suck

  • zotero for citation and bibliography manager

  • backed up to nextcloud

  • i have paperless-ngx but found it randomly errors a ton of things and zotero is fine.

  • considering if it’s worth it to have so many different spread out methods

  • theyre fun to use but it creates more chaos then needed

I've gone handwritten, obsidian, onenote, and now Trilium. Considering switching to something else because there is no offline mobile support.

I use memos and trilium together but since neither offers mobile offline support considering switching both. No reason to run two services when I could run one.

Considering:

  • Joplin
  • Logseq
  • SiYuan
  • ?

Libgen.li worked well.

Edit: someone in the comments says restored. I’m on mobile can’t link them

I backup my files via rsync then have some essentially docker containers backed up and running in case the first one goes down :)

I found some that do the opposite, take digital writing and format into a printed list.

It seems to be a similar issue to this: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/106?scrollToComments=true

I see the docs say I need to search for every comment..??? https://join-lemmy.org/docs/administration/federation_getting_started.html

But that doesn't appear to be how it works on other posts.
