The research in question here obviously isn’t pubmed or publishing journals but boomer Facebook memes, “holistic” mommy bloggers and at least a few nazis in a trench coat pretending to be a doctor

That's what happened with twitter and mastodon. People will come in waves.

I think inevitably Reddit's utter collapse will be power mods causing intense drama as well the mods who are actually capable of curating content properly having left. I was surprised no hate subs spawned from the migration away from reddit, but I realized something. The people who would likely moderate hate subs now moderate the mainstream subs. Shit is going to hit the fan.

Once prominent celebrities and more news agencies start to come (and they will, the BBC is a sign of that) the culture will shift faster than you really realize. There is still an insular culture around the fediverse that tends to be a big barrier around entry for "normies" right now. Going on a mastodon instance as a new user with limited technical knowledge can be quite jarring especially if you step out of line of what it seen as culturally fitting for the fediverse

The eternal september moment for the fediverse is very much coming

It came after I was arguing with weirdo antisemites in c/atheistmemes so I assume it was because of that but I have no idea and don’t really care to know that much

Those that even remotely consider scraping data on Mastodon consistently face intense harassment and criticism.

If that is true in any way whatsoever, that is a completely moronic long term goal. Lemmy devs themselves have encouraged instances who do such a thing to defederate. I don't see how realistically advertising or monetization would be done not only without immense privacy concerns that would likely affect the rest of the fediverse but without major protests and mass defederation. The backlash against it would be immense, not just on lemmy but across the fediverse itself.
