Lots of non-answers but to clarify - yes but no comments.

Sometimes a login wall might block you but if you refresh a couple of times it should work.

no invite and I've been on the waitlist since it's been announced :(

That's exactly what will happen.

which it has not and is not going to

So you're confident that AGI is not fundamentally possible? That would contradict basically every single scientist in the world and this is exactly why this issue is so difficult. Ironically, proving my point for the OP's question lol

That's simply not true. All datacenters of the world (including crypto) only use 6% of our power.

Apple absolutely harms other companies to the point where are taken to court all the time.

There's no such thing as "their own ecosystem"

That AI safety is much more important than AI hurting copyright or artists.

I say this because the "AI sucks haha" and "AI just steals" retoric is very harmful to AI safety movement as people just don't believe AGI or even close-to-AGI will be capable enough to harm our society.

Currently many estimate that there's 1-20% chance that AGI could end our civilization. So fuck the copyright and fuck the artists when we're looking at ods like this we need to start preparing now even if it's 10 years away.

But alas, nobody can't think further out than the length of their nose and honestly I'm just hoping we're lucky enough to be in that 80% because clearly we're not going to do anything about it.

As someone who writes on Medium ocassionally — no.

Medium like all other blogging platforms has a problem of incentive. The pay is too little for quality writing and there's always a gamble on whether your article gets views as you don't control SEO or even formatting for that matter.

It was always filled with low effor slop because most are either:

  • practicing writing
  • building out their brand which is basically newbies
  • trying to make pennies through low effor churn

I feel for Medium here as it does have an unsolvable problem really and AI has nothing to do with it.

My home garden. I'm by no means a great gardener but I'm a software developer working from home and just popping in there to spend 30 minutes caring for the plants is really refreshing.

They're just jumping the newscycle for the propaganda machine. Russian government doesn't care about tech or linux unless it can help them deliver more bombs to Ukrainian babies and you don't need to fork the kernel for that.

The way Apple gets away with stuff makes me feel very conspiratorial. Like, how?

How is Apple getting a pass every time and my tin foil hat would say that they are protected by the US government. Maybe because it's just an important corporation for the US economy but maybe it's an important corporation for US spying too.

It's incredible how long Apple has gotten a pass which makes me wonder why are they so protected.

I wonder what Lemmings are thinking of this device. I admire the innovation but just don't see how this would be used in practice outside of memes.

Ad free Facebook and Instagram is officially on. I'm trying to stay open minded but honestly it's too expensive especially with this sneaky account center rule unless you're in an unfortunate position where you need to spend a lot of time on these platforms.

Android browsers can already add pages to home screen but Hermit takes this even futher.

It has significantly better UX with frameless and full screen modes. You can bookmark pages, so on Lemmy you can quickly bookmark community in specific sorting order. There are user scripts and blockers and loads of customization. You can even add push notifications for changes on the site or RSS feed.

I've been running most Fediverse web apps through Hermit and it works really well! The only exception is that I couldn't figure out how to setup notifications on Mastodon.
