I feel for you.. When you're at one you feel guilty for not being at the other and you constantly feel like you're failing at both. Everyone told me to make time for myself and i didn't even know what that meant. Try not to let the frustration and guilt get to you. Sleep when you can.

Mine eventually (after years) faded into the background and now it only really bothers me if I'm in a quiet place.

He grew up in a military family. You did what you were told and didn't question.

Ask for help. I have a sketchy knee that gives out sometimes and i need to have one hand on the stair rail just in case. If I'm carrying something that requires two hands at work, I have no problem asking someone to grab the other side of it on the stairs. My husband would not ask for help unless it was something really heavy. He would put himself at risk to avoid admitting he needed help - it'll be fine. Well sure, it's always fine, until it's not.

I'm in Dallas Texas. No state income tax, but property tax is about 2% of home value, so even if it's paid off your looking at ~$500/mo on a $300k house, which is about the minimum in the city here right now. If you're over a certain age that's reduced a bit. If you had decent insulation here on a smaller house and you're cautious with your AC use, you could probably get away with electricity of $100/mo most of the year and $200 in the summer. I think my water/sewer/trash is about $60 a month and my gas is about $60 a month. Our home and auto insurance is high in Texas. I'm cheap, so we use 5g internet for $30/mo. Gas is $2.70/gal here today. I threw a few things in an online grocery cart and screenshotted so you can see our food prices.

We have shifted from using MR (mentally retarded) to using ID (intellectual disability). Even before that change, we tended to say MR instead of retarded, i guess because of the way it gets thrown around negatively and feels uncomfortable to say. Similarly, people are using autistic negatively to describe someone who's quirky or introverted, narrowing what's seen as 'normal'. If you have to ask if it's ok to say something, other people will probably have a gut reaction to you if you say it. Whether that matters is up to you.

I popped into r/ today to read about furniture and now I'm feeling kinda dirty. Maybe i should donate to lemmy as penance.

Cleaning out my mom's house. I hate to trash things that may be useful to someone else and some of it's probably worth some $$. I've used Facebook marketplace a couple of times. I've heard of OfferUp and LetGo but haven't used them. Where will i get the best response and $? Should i just pile it all up and do an online estate sale instead? TIA. Also, if anyone has done this and has any general tips, please share.

My 10 year old pup is going blind. We've been in the same house for most of her life and she's doing ok, but I'm worried it's going to get more difficult for her. She's not the smartest, but she can sit, lie down, and shake on command. I've read several articles about scent training but would like to get tips from someone who has done it. I'm thinking of using 4 different scents for bed, toys, stairs, and food/water - i know she can smell the food, but i want to make sure she can find the water bowl when she's outside. Is that too many?

One article recommended marking a path on the floor/ground so she knows where there's a clear route. Another suggested marking furniture/obstacles so she knows where to avoid.

If you have any experience with this and can offer tips, i would appreciate it. Also, if you want to share any happy stories about your VI pets, i would love to hear them. It's heartbreaking to see her misjudge the doorway or bonk into things.

Have you ever been asked to participate in a political poll? Do you know of anyone who has?

Sick and feel like I've hit the end of Netflix, Prime, ... Is there a community about what everyone is streaming/recommending?

Boss is going away for a few days and we're trying to create a fun surprise for when she returns. Our offices are all shared so it has to be limited to a small area and can't impact other people toooo much.

It was initially used by BP to shift blame to consumers instead of oil companies.

I keep seeing people comment that Lemmy is mostly men in their 20s and 30s. That's not my demo and many of the posts/comments i see don't seem to fit that.
