Hello I've been playing around with an old laptop as my home server for 1 year and I think that now it's a good time to upgrade to something better since it feels a bit too slow.

I was thinking to buy a synology but I would prefer something custom because I hate that sometimes the manufacturers decide to abandon support or change all their terms of service.

My budget is about 1000$ USD, I'm looking for it to have at least 20TB and the option to later add a graphics card would be nice.

What do you recommend to buy? Also what software do you recomend? Also could it work with an n100 mini PC?

I've been using Ubuntu server, with docker containers for several services, but I mainly use it for Nextcloud

The iisue is having people use the platform. On Lemmy we are getting there :). Also I've seen some niche communities using forums still.

You can send a phone number on WhatsApp and when clicking on it it gives you the option to chat with that number

The only problem I see with KDE Connect is that you need to pair the devices. Works great if both are yours, but probably its not something you want leave with the default settings if its shared with someone else.

This is almost what I do, but could you elaborate on how you use digicam for management?

I see radicale recomended, but in what ways is it better than nextcloud? I moved to nextcloud for calendar due to syncing issues when sharing calendars. So far it seems to be fine, but this question got me wondering about what can be done better.

The only thing I've found that bothers me is that to add someone to the event he needs to also have nextcloud otherwise it gets weird.

Depends on your setup, I used to have 4 cameras that only saved when motion was detected and they filled 1tb in about a month.

And it's really sad the way that's been normalized.

That's great news!

Hello I've been using cloudflare to get remote access for the couple apps I selfhost, but lately I've been hearing about the wonders of tailscale.

It seems that the free tier is enough for my use. Which would be a safe option to have remote access for my 3D printer? Also how are both in terms of privacy?
