The porn industry, like many industries, is very exploitative of those who do the actual work.

A lot of the other replies here are very cynical about simps, loneliness, etc but a much more optimistic view of it is adult performers gaining complete control over their careers. They get to decide their own schedules, exactly what kind of content they want to make, keep (almost) all of the money that their content generates, and maintain ownership of their content.

There’s a documentary called “Rise of OnlyFans” that was pretty shittily produced, but I learned some pretty wild things from the interviews in it, e.g. when they did a shoot for a normal porn studio, they would only get paid $100 FLAT for a video that would take several hours to make. Like yeah, that’s more than minimum wage, but they’re certainly not shooting every day and that’s peanuts compared to what the video generates in revenue

I do Onlyfans so I have a good perspective (I promise I am nit trying to promote I won't even tell you what it is I want this to be my vent account)

First off I do like doing it, I am a sexually open person and it is kind of fun trying out new fantasies and toys. I admit chatting with customers is not the best my fans aren't to talkative.

I make decent money and that is good I am not the most employable. I haven't worked much and I used to have substance use issues and I have some small charges for them. I went to community college to be a therapist and liked it but college is hard and so risky with student loans so I just quit after getting my associates.

The money is just to good to pass up and it's appealing to gen Z girls who are more sexually open and don't want to be a wife or mom or even go the standard 9 to 5 route.

The overt commodification of literally everything coupled with a general population struggling to make ends meet.

Others have mentioned money, but I would like to propose this: horny

Humanity is not as refined as people pretend they are. At the end of the day, a large majority of what we do is directly or indirectly about getting laid.

Men workout to make themselves more attractive. They take jobs that pay well to make themselves more attractive, they go to schools to get better jobs to make themselves more attractive.

Women spend time on fitness, makeup, fashion, and education to try to find a better partner.

It's not all about sex, but a lot of it is. It's biologically wired into us so we reproduce.

I think it's mostly the boobies.

It's an easy way to make money at home.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

It's really not. The vast majority of women on only fans never make any money at all and incur significant costs associated with scrubbing profiles / moving / dissociating from their OF profiles. It's a trap for women and it's why some countries have outlawed the site entirely.

A big hidden cost is dmca services to remove leak sites.

Look leak sites for most models especially smaller ones just aren't worth taking down. The DMCA services often are used to late and the sites have already been lost from your interested buyer pool, they tend to cost more then you lose from leaks and a lot of sites are outside US jurisdiction.

Obviously if you are a big OF creator the these make sense but if you are rich enough to justify it you now who you are

I know a few girls who made one, and it didnt do particularly well, so after a couple months or a year or two they deleted them and any mention of them, got a new friend group and swapped cities, and are now dating ppl again. Out of the 4 that I still know/follow on social media that come to mind, 3 have been in relationships for over a year at least and 2 swapped to like clean conservative girl aesthetics.

Kinda of an interesting pipeline, a lot of them think theyll blow up fast and overestimate themselves, don't work for it or realize its mostly/only ppl they know secretly buying their stuff and get creeped out. They don't realize its a job and unless they already have social media fame it wont work out, so a lot of girls literally try to blow up just to makw retirement onlyfans money.

End of they day some of them do make a shit ton of money if it suceeds, like go retire in a high income area away and just say you do remote work . its easy enough to change your appearence by just aging, haircut, makeup, etc. and not being in the public for a while. They can just move states/towns, etc. if it's an issue. Like look at ppls sub costs, then look at their subscribers, some of them make 6 figures monthly, if you thought you could wouldn't you?

I would, my future kids could have trauma, because now we can afford therapists lmao.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago

The issue is just they all think theyll be one of those top 5%ers making 6 figs a month retiring quickly, and it can't be everyone

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The male loneliness epidemic perhaps?

People are losing touch with reality

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Honestly it's more a question of why people like camgirls (over the old, professional porn offerings). The business has grown because it's popular.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The gigantic increase in simps, incels, and losers basically. Girls can take advantage of them to the tune of thousands of dollars a month just by posting some saucy videos and pretending to be interested in them by responding to messages or saying their name in a video.

More power to the women, honestly. It's the mens fault.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 day ago

I get the downvotes, but it's not wrong. You don't even have to go to OF, i can't even watch women who stream video games, because these people are unhinged and not well. And a lot of them obviously play into it, just look at the framing of male vs female streamers. It is not an accident that there is a lot of cleavage in the frame. You can go even a step further. I used to play a lot of Team Fortress 2, usually on community servers where i knew people, and a lot of people talked. It was like 40% regulars and 60% randoms. When one of the girls spoke, you vould suddenly feel the air changing in the server. Suddenly they got all sweaty and started to fully m'lady. I once changed my steam name to something that could be interpreted as being a male or female name. I suddenly got friend requests and people gifting me items that are worth real world money. This never happened in the other 4000 hours of me playing the game.

Capitalism.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Money.

I just want to complain about how every single NSFW community on Lemmy is essentially a giant advertisement for Onlyfans. Every single OP who posts pictures/videos has a giant link to their Onlyfans in their profile. It's such garbage. I've seen people censor their photos here as an obvious bait plot to drive traffic to their uncensored onlyfans. Unfortunately the mods of these communities don't seem to give a fuck.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Are there rules against professionals posting in those forums?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Nope. But I think it makes the communities feel fake and un-authentic. As I mentioned, certain pictures/videos are clearly designed to drive traffic to their onlyfans. It becomes about money rather than passion. Totally not sexy at all. Also many of these people aren't even the ones posting. They have agents do it for them.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Sounds like you should make your own community for amateurs only if you despise Onlyfans models this much.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

so fun fact there are dudes who have a fetish for censored porn. I am not making this up lol.
