I’ve always wondered how Ventongimps got its name

I once went past Land of Nod. Weirdly it doesn't seem to appear on a map (at least when I looked for it), but it is on the road sign. I tried to visit but couldn't find it, only the sign pointing towards it.
It was somewhat near Wetwang, which is another excellent place name.
Land of nod is brilliant!!
I want to know the origins of Shingay cum Wendy
I grew up near Slut's Hole Lane. It didn't have a sign at the time and I only found the name on an old map, but the sign has been put back since.
More recently a regular walk would take me past a woodland called Fiscal Policy. I did find an explanation for this one. I can't recall the details, but it was rather dull overall.
I did wonder from your name if you grew up in that part of the country.
I spent my teenage years only a few miles away but hadn’t heard of the lane until a decade or so back.
Fucking hell that's amazing
There's obviously all the quality rude ones like Bell End/Wetwang/Shitterton/Penistone etc, but for a question on Lemmy, I'm pretty sure Barton-in-the-Beans (Wiki link) would be most appropriate.
I want to live in Bitchfield. I want that on my address.
Came across this when I visited Shetland. Which might be one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Edit: We also visited Twatt. But for the life of me I can’t find the picture.
If you like Shetland, I'm sure you'd love Iceland!
Oh yeah, it’s already on the list!
Edit: We also visited Twatt. But for the life of me I can’t find the picture.
Have you turned off safe search?
Those are great names!
Ballywatticock is a contender. Shitterton is funny because it literally means what you think it means as it was next to an open sewer. When I was younger I thought Ballybogey was hilarious.
Technically you could count "Derry/Londonderry" as a de facto placename as a whole by how it's used, even though it is technically two names of the same place side by side. But I realised how bizarre it is for people who don't know about the history of it, and come into a bus or a train station and hear an announcement for "Derry-London-Derry" or see "Londonderry Derry" on Google Maps.
Another one I like is Torpenhow Hill. Basically Tor means hill. Then someone invaded and the name changed, saw a hill at Tor and called it Tor Pen, which also means hill. Then another group comes along and adds their word for Hill as "How", and then finally we see the hill and add the word "Hill"
Lisburn is another contender. While most places with "burn" in the name refers to a river, Lisburn is named that way because it's the rebuilt part of Lisnagarvey that burned down. There's even a phoenix in the armorial achievement.
Everyone talks about Penistone, but within a couple of miles of it we've also got Netherthong, Dungworth and Wigtwizzle, all excellent
Not crazy, but I always thought Giggleswick and Wiggleswoth on opposite sides of A65 is funny.
I'm quite fond of Wyre Piddle, although it doesn't hold a candle to some of the names in these comments lol
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lympne because the spelling is just stupid, why is there a p in the middle!
When you get to a certain age there’s always a p in the middle.
Fingringhoe and Penistone have got to be up there.
