We learn something new every day. This is a community dedicated to informing each other and helping to spread knowledge.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must begin with TIL. Linking to a source of info is optional, but highly recommended as it helps to spark discussion.

** Posts must be about an actual fact that you have learned, but it doesn't matter if you learned it today. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.**

Rule 2- Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding non-TIL posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-TIL posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

For further explanation, clarification and feedback about this rule, you may follow this link.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

Or was this the first example of gurilla paid advertisement in the comments section? "How do I advertise my dental practice? I know I'll pretend I was disturbed by a telegram and they shall print my complaint! And it shall goeth viraleth"

indubitably

[–] [email protected] 77 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Was expecting something like: "We've been trying to reach you about your horse and buggy warranty."

In June 1864, everyone in London was receiving telegrams about grieving widows looking for company in the neighbourhood.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Hot widows in your area are bored with using candlesticks and require a gentleman.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 years ago

Hot rich widows in the countryside await your acquaintance. "Triflers need not apply."

Those vehicle warranty ads are so insidious. The ones I get use packaging that's typically reserved for official government mailers and sometimes include the name of a govt agency that has nothing to do with them.

Whenever I throw one out I imagine how many elderly people must be mistaking them for govt business and getting fleeced out of their money.

[–] [email protected] 55 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Mr. Gabriel sure got his money's worth from his telegram, since we're still circulating it 159 years later.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yeah i went down there today, but they weren't in professional attendance (presumably because it is now October)

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 years ago

Four stars. Will change to five stars when they open.

27 Harley Street is now an ear, nose and throat specialist with a reputation for treating people who can’t burp.

Probably still disturbing people using the intolerable nuisance known as "telegrams."

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 years ago

I don't even have telegram installed.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

So they've gone out of business. It looks like the advertising campaign didn't work then

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

Sounds like something out of r/writing prompts.

A wizard makes a deal to live forever. The cost he must pay is 100 healthy human teeth every year...

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

I would love to be able to burp, but a Botox injection in the neck/throat ? Nah I think I'll pass

[–] [email protected] 35 points 2 years ago

Unsubscribe me at once, you scoundrels!

[–] [email protected] 23 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Imagine how much better the world could have been if the editor of The Times had taken the time to have a quick word with a dentist in 1864!

  • your faithful servant

Oof, kiss the ring buddy

[–] [email protected] 36 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Merely colloquial and of the time your grace

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Spam by telegram and get free ad in national newspaper ?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago

Sign of a professional.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 years ago

Literally just how people ended letters in 1864. It's like seeing someone say "bless you" to a sneeze and scoffing at it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Ah, someone hasn't seen Hamilton?

[–] [email protected] -1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Ah, someone gets thier history from movies?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yeah that wasn't the point but thanks for splitting that hair down the middle, you made a vast difference here....

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I like how every single reply of yours so far makes you seem like a bigger tool. It's aspirational.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (2 children)

What you think of me is for you to think, not for me to care about. Thanks.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

What you think of me is for you to think

Big if true

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (2 children)

I also think you're a tool if it helps. Or indeed if it does not.

I hope it doesn't, this is fun.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Trolls are gonna troll 🤷‍♂️

What kind of weirdo admits to deriving pleasure this way? Idk but not a normal person. Time for some self reflection there bub.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

Thing is I'm not trying to act superior and then look like a total melon because I'm not the one that thinks that Hamilton, a famous musical, is a movie so I'm not thinking I'm the strange one here.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 years ago (1 children)

If I remember correctly, weren’t telegrams fairly expensive back in the day? Did the dentist get some kind of “bulk discount”?

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 years ago

how old are you?

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Wow, there are actually still medical offices there.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Harley street is the most famous place in the country for (private) medical practices. Today there’s thousand of people employed in one type of medical job or another there.

Notice seems to be where all the cryopreservatory places are. Because if you're going to be stolen liquid nitrogen after death I suppose you should do it somewhere ritzy.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 years ago

Forget going back in time to kill baby Hitler... Let's get the dentist instead.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 years ago

Good day sir .... here is your daily wheel barrow load of telegrams.

I believe I saw a message from your mother in there.

Til the morrow with my next wheel barrow.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

They're still around in most of the world. If you wanna spend 20 bucks on a telegram that could have easily been a free email, go for it

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago

Come to think of it, email is a form of telegram, since it's translated to 1's and 0's, or dots and dashes......??

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

The German Post just discontinued their service two years ago :(

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It wasn't electronic since he clearly says "placed into my hands".

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 years ago

When you read spam in your phone, the message is in your hands!!

Checkmate, atheïst!
