I'm on a smaller instance or at least feels small as sometimes we don't have posts for over 10 minutes, How would I find other Communities & Users to follow to get content I may enjoy?

Go to https://lemmyverse.net/, fill in your instance, and click the links to communities that sound interesting. It'll open them in your instance and get them federated so your server starts getting those updates.

Click the house, put your instance.

Look up nice instances, hit the (i), then select the house.

Is that the way down to do it?

Nice feature BTW!

I have a guide for this! I just reshared it on [email protected] and you can find the guide here: https://lemmy.ca/post/11285664

NewToLemmy is also great if you want to ask questions about things.

I also copied the guide below, but I won't be updating this comment in the future, so use the link above for the most up-to-date version of the guide

🌐 Instances to look through

You can find communities from specific instances

A great way to find lesser known communities is to look at the /communities page on an instance. Different instances may have different themes or focuses, and so you can find related communities that way.

For example: https://lemmy.ca/communities

  • pangora.social: Great way to find instances related to a particular topic. This is also great for picking an instance when first making an account/moving accounts.
  • awesome-lemmy-instances

When you have a topic in mind, but don't know if a community exists for it

🔥 Apps and Browser Extensions

These can make it easier to find, subscribe, and manage communities on different instances

Just wanted to say, I really appreciate the stuff you do.

Thank you, I'm glad people find it helpful :)

I can't say, but I have been here since June 10th and most of my subscriptions are for communities I joined in the first 3 weeks. Those earliest communities are far better for dialog than any sorting algorithm I have seen from the original, photon, or alexanderite versions of Lemmy. I don't know how I could share those and our interests are likely different. My subscription feed is the only way I know I will find something to engage with every time. It is a major problem here with new users unable to find real conversations that are happening IMO.

Sorting by New Comments will usually find the active discussions

Do you mean within your instance or outside it?

If outside, check out the collections page at kbin.social - even if you can't navigate to it from your instance (you probably can though since it's another kbin) it's worth looking through some of the collections (multis).

E.g you might be interested in the multi-community feed https://kbin.social/c/PCGaming

Another thing worth doing is go to a magazine you like, click on the microblog tag to see the associated Mastodon posts, and then start looking at the people and exploring the hashtags. I have found some really good content that way.

Also, following people who post interesting stuff in one of your existing communities and seeing where else they post.
