No, those aren't true "soap operas." Real soaps were on five days a week and were campy as fuck, people dying and being reincarnated as an orangutan whose brain was surgically placed into their still living twin, only to find they are now pregnant by their ex lover's mother in law, who happens to be a powerful psychic and knows all the secrets that will turn life upside down for the handsome new guy in town who can't seem to ever keep a shirt on...

It's all lit in a really specific way too, like 90's Glamour Shots from the mall- all blurry and glowy, in a dreamy way.

I'm gonna say Sunrise Bay was most likely referring to Sunset Beach. It ran from 1997- 1999 and had 755 episodes. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118484/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Unrelated but for some reason the new TVs I bought came with motion smoothing or some setting that made it look like a soap opera.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago

Yes they're all like that now. I immediately turn it off and don't understand people who don't.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago

For the longest time I thought this was the way all 4K tvs looked so I avoided getting one. It looks horrible.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I've noticed that too! It drives me crazy. I'm always expecting an evil twin to show up.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago

Wait, you don't turn motion smoothing off?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

Can you give the settings path usually for this, I wanna see if my tv does it?

Like settings > motion > smoothing or what?

So where can I watch this?

So, some of the details there are switched around as I only caught an episode here and there as they aired, but Passions. If that interests you, you'll love Passions. Be warned, sexual assault is a very regular, recurring plot device.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passions

(spoilers)

2001 witnessed the failed double-wedding of popular couples Luis and Sheridan and Ethan and Theresa, and their subsequent journey to Bermuda, where Sheridan apparently perished in a boat explosion and Theresa wound up married to Ethan's ex-stepfather, Julian Crane. In 2002, Julian and Timmy set out on a journey in the magical land of Oz as Theresa was "executed" for Julian's "murder"

In 2003, Passions submitted an orangutan named BamBam, who had been portraying the recurring role of Precious, for a Daytime Emmy Award. Precious was the non-speaking live-in nurse and caregiver for elderly Edna Wallace, and held an unrequited love for Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald, which was depicted in elaborate fantasy sequences.

In summer 2005, the prominent character Simone Russell came out as gay; Passions made daytime history by being the first serial to show two women—Simone and love interest Rae Thomas—in bed making love.[14] In 2007, it was revealed that longtime hero Chad Harris-Crane was cheating on his wife with another man. This was also a daytime first, with the men portrayed in bed together, committing—albeit unknowingly—incest.[15] Passions also portrayed Vincent as an intersex person who became pregnant with his own father's son.[16]

2006 saw the extravagant Passions Vendetta plot,[37] in which Alistair lured 19 people (Whitney, Simone, Paloma, Chad, Ethan, Theresa, Gwen, Lena, Spike, Jessica, Maya, Noah, Esmé, Fancy, Luis, Edna Wallace, Norma Bates, Beth, and Marty) to Rome, where he planned to take over the world with a chalice stolen from the Pope's private chambers; the plot saw the death of Lena, Maya, Alistair, Beth, and Marty.

Passions was wild. They had a witch.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago

Fancy, ... Norma Bates

What are these names?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago

Holy shit, lmao

You're going to be shocked to learn they're still on. Our channel 11 and 21 show the same thing in the mornings, but if she leaves the TV on when she goes to work and it's on the wrong one, about 10 or 11am it switches to the same soaps that my mom used to watch when I was a kid.

I asked my wife and there's still a victor, still a Penelope and like 4 Alecias, and they're still played by the same actors! Talk about a career of they're still on the same gig after 40 years. And one guy must be 90 now.

The stories seem less TeleNovela and more Real Housewives, though, as now I discover it's on the wrong channel when, instead of prim and proper news anchors, there's the sounds of screeching and cat fights in the living room and it disturbs a Teams call in my office.

I think the Brit one with the guy from Red Dwarf is still on, too.

Is there always an icebox with booze just chillin' as a permanent uncredited supporting "character" (like Italian food in The Sopranos)?

Edit: also, fucking amazing writeup aha! That was quite the journey you just sent me on, wowzer

I used to watch Young & the Restless. They had crystal decanters filled with whiskey.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

Where can this be watched now, it seems pretty obscure

Is there like a SoapFlix for all this stuff?

Like Hayu for Reality shows but for Soaps

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I don't see it anywhere. I don't know anything about "sailing the high seas" but perhaps that would be an option.

Its on Archive.org, a fellow Lemming commented on my follow-up post yesterday
