It's a bit more complicated. It's a tactital decision, which was made back in the 19th century under Bebel. If you start a research about Kurt Eisner you will find the first debates about it. It's also one of the reasons why they supported ww1 and betrayed the revolution. And of course they're our last big workers-party, which makes it so tragical.
