I pay for Spotify and YouTube music. If I really like an album I'll still go to Bandcamp if I can and grab the flac files. If it's not there I'll just BitTorrent/Soulseek/yt-dlp it.
If I don't have raw media files, I don't actually own it.
I know I'm an old fart but I still like having mp3s and dvds (or the equivalent files) because I don't trust the streamers to not stop making something available or jerk the rug out from under me. Like you said, once you have the data you own it.
Bandcamp just got bought out. So they're next in line for enshitification.
I'm hoping like Epic Games, the new parent just let's the do their thing. Wishful thinking I'm sure.
Why pay for Spotify or YouTube music if you can just use alternatives like ViMusic?
I actually really like Spotify as a service. YouTube music comes free with YouTube premium and that is the simplest way to stops add on Roku. Plus, I don't mind supporting video makers.
I agree with the fact that it is more personalized and a lot easier to find good music to listen to. I just would hate to pay money like that because I usually stop using the service after awhile and forget to cancel the subscription lol
