I want my day mildly ruined, not completely ruined.

It's just good to get something in this website for casual viewing whilst refreshing original content is added overtime.

Time to close all your accounts on anything owned by Meta, y'all. There is a Fediverse or privacy-oriented version of everything they do. And maybe you won't find the same people there, but you certainly will find new ones that are definitely worth your time and attention. Ad-free. Nazi-bootlicker-free.

I use messenger to keep contact with my mom, dad and siblings. If I delete it i literally can’t talk to them so it’s kinda necessary at this point
Your parents and siblings wouldn't answer you if you texted or called them?
That's pretty bleak
You can deactivate your Facebook account, it keeps messenger ONLY still active. A great step while you encourage them to try a different app.
Of course it can't work right away for everyone. But it's a conversation you can have, explain your concerns, why it would be better to move on to a different software.
I used to talk to my family over WhatsApp, until they had a 24h outage and we switched to Signal, to never come back. But I still have dozens of other people there who won't switch. At some point it's a tradeoff you decide to make
Deleted my FB account just now.
I’d had the thing since 2003. It was the last non-fedi social media I was holding onto (the only way to keep in touch with certain people, and all that.)
All the power to you! We need to normalize keeping in touch with each other in a more personal way. They robbed writing thoughtful letters, postcards and greeting cards from us.
But... Facebook was created in 2004?
Now that you mention it, I might be a bit off in my math. It’s not my best subject.
Thinking about it a little more, I probably made the account in 2006 or so.
Anyone have a recommendation for a cross platform fediverse app to replace FB Messenger specifically? I don’t use the FB site but I do use Messenger to stay in touch with my family back home and for a group chat with my wife and kids.
Would specifically need macOS, Windows and iOS support.
Signal is available on all those platforms.
Element uses the Matrix protocol. We use and love it.
i've moved my communication to Signal, it's been good so far and i haven't heard of privacy-related incidents
I stopped using any Meta app and website several years ago, but I lost my 2FA so the only way I can log in to delete the accounts is to send a photo of my ID card and other stuff to Meta to prove who I am, I really don't feel like doing that. I'm not sure what the best action is, just let it be or do as they ask to be able to delete everything.
yeah it's probable better not committing additional information, they won't collect more about you if you never use it
