An idling gas engine may be annoyingly loud, but that's the price you pay for having WAY less torque available at a standstill.

EVs do not use more energy than gasoline cars, that's nonsense. The best ICE engine is ~40% efficient plus the losses from braking. Battery electric is closer to 80%. They are only around 10-15% heavier.
