Hi,

I just tried to upload an image to a (remote) community via the sdf instance and got a JSON syntax error message.

Also tried using Jerboa and got a "network error".

Is something broken?

Thanks

I saw that SDF hosts a Minecraft server. I'm wondering if there is an SDF Minecraft community page?

It could be a fun idea to get one going.

I've only played Minecraft a couple of times so I'm hesitant to create one. Anyone here involved in the server?

Are other people's subscriptions showing? Mine aren't, in any of the apps I'm using (wefwef, connect, liftoff). My home page is populated from my subscriptions though.

No, really! I appreciate both the informative update and the overall tone of writing which reinforces my gratitude for finding and joining this instance.

If you would like, could you introduce yourself and share your thoughts in regards to the Reddit migration and the Fediverse in the !sdfpubnix ?

Digging into the Fediverse is my attempt at a return to participating in communities rather than just lurking. In the days of IRC and message boards, I was incredibly active and had ops/mod/admin duties on a few sites. I also started a site which became a community of thousands/tens of thousands. And then the toxicity took off, typical threats of doxxing and worse, the burnout came, and Facebook Groups/Reddit started obliterating forums. I withdrew from the chaos and decided to just watch from the sidelines.

The Reddit and Twitter fiascos were my wake up call to stop doom scrolling and find platforms I'd feel comfortable posting on. I'm a Spoonie (long read, but worth it to understand living with chronic health conditions) so I have very limited energy compared to my younger, healthier days online; hence my responding to an email from Tuesday on a Saturday. Supporting malicious platforms is something I don't want to devote any of my precious spoons to. But, I am trying to set aside time, or spoons, to settling in on Lemmy and Mastodon because I want to see the Fediverse succeed.

As for more personal intro info:

I grew up in the days of Atari and Apple, borrowed friends' computers to use BBSes, scrounged used parts from friends to build and upgrade my PCs and have always been tech-adjacent at the very least, but never got the chance to sink my teeth into programming, tech, etc. as deeply as I wanted. Life, amiright?

I'm a technical writer by training and trade (hey, don't judge my casual writing, okay?), a car dork, music fan, am owned by cats, and have more interests than time. Earlier this year, I completed my first-ever-entirely-from-NEW-parts PC, but I'm going back to my roots and scrounging once more to put together a box to run Ubuntu Server and Pi-hole for use here at home.

Oh, and when I saw that the SDF actually stood for the Super Dimension Fortress that always pops into my head when I see those three letters, that pretty well sealed the deal for me to give THIS particular instance a try.

Thanks for making this instance available and for all the hard work that goes into it!

Now to click the Create button for the first time and hope I didn't screw something up...

Did you all see that SDF Chatter is listed as the first recommended Lemmy instance in this popular Awesome List?

The description is a bit vague.

Does "members" mean paying members? I plan to do at least ARPA but I don't even have a free UNIX shell account anymore (I used one for about a month a few years ago, but I think it expired due to inactivity).

What topics are acceptable here? I have a few questions about using Lemmy in general, and some specific ones about this instance. Is this the right local community to post them in?

32

@SDF @sdfpubnix Please tell me that all #SDF instances across the Fediverse will be #defederating with #threads.net and any other instances created thereafter by any of the major data mining tech companies.

Hi, I just discovered SDF whilst looking for a Lemmy instance. Things look really interesting here. Hopefully will learn a lot.

Quick question re: mastodon SDF instance. Should I be able to log in with my Lemmy credentials or do I have to register a new account? Maybe a stupid question, but thought i should ask!

34

It looks like SDF's Mastodon instance (v4.0.2) is vulnerable, and requires patching to either 4.1.3 or 4.0.5. I don't want to back-seat admin, but I know the SDF crew have a lot on their plate. Are they aware of this vulnerability?

EDIT: The instance has now been updated to v4.0.5!

Locally, that is. It seems like posts are missing from communities that were made before a day or two ago.

EDIT: To be more precise, I can only see posts in local communities that were made up to 4 days ago. I'm experiencing this behavior both with Jerboa and the web UI.

UPDATE: Sorting by Active or Hot is what breaks things. Once changing to sort by New, all community posts show.

When I view this community through lemmy.world, there are 2 posts (mine and one more). But when I view it through lemmy.sdf.org, only my post is visible. I don't understand why is this happening.

Hey fellow MetaARPAns! I use the MetaARPA VPS service, and I run a NetBSD image. Right now the image is NetBSD version 9.1, and I'd like to upgrade to 9.3. Has anyone done this (and if so what did you do and do you have any tips)? Will sysupgrade in pkgsrc Do The Right Thing^tm^ in a xen environment?

Many thanks in advance!

I started subscribing to some communities and noticed that for example I can't find [email protected] from here. Why is that?

The StackExchange communities could easily be migrated to the Fediverse. Aside from embedded advertising on StackExchange's website, is there any catalyst that could trigger this?

I've had a hard time using the instance over the last few days. I don't know if it is from user influx or not. I'm not currently capable of seeing the other communication channels to SDF itself, and I've seen no updates here. Is it me? Was the instance having trouble? Where can I see this info if/as problems arise?

Just noticed that lemmy.sdf.org is on the list of domains causing traffic trouble for kbin for some reason. Considering we only have ~2.7k users I wonder if there's some other bug going on.

Copy of the post here: Today kbin.social is blocking a huge list of domains just to get federation working again.

The reason for this temporally block is not to defederate, but rather to get the large backlog of 500k messenger queue processed again. Anyway, this does mean that kbin.social is federating again with other instances.

This is a temporary measure. Several users / developers are looking into how to better optimize the failed message queue, as we speak. Hopefully Ernest has eventually time to dive into solutions as well instead of workarounds, once his instance is migrated to Kubernets. See my preview thread: https://kbin.melroy.org/m/updates/t/4257/Kbin-federation-issues-and-infra-upgrade

List of the domains causing trouble:

lemmygrad.ml, eientei.org, vive.im, lemmy.ml, lemmynsfw.com, kbin.lol, lemmy.webgirand.eu, tuna.cat, posta.no, lemmy.atay.dev, sh.itjust.works, kbin.stuffie.club, kbin.dssc.io, bolha.social, dataterm.digital, kbindev.lerman-development.com, test.fedia.io, mer.thekittysays.icu, lemmy.stark-enterprise.net, kbin.rocks, kbin.cocopoops.com, kbin.lgbt, lemmy.deev.io, lemmy.lucaslower.com, lemmy.norbz.org, social.jrruethe.info, digitalgoblin.uk, pwzle.com, lemmy.friheter.com, federated.ninja, lemmy.shtuf.eu, u.fail, arathe.net, lemmy.click, thekittysays.icu, lemmy.ubergeek77.chat, lemmy.maatwo.com, faux.moe, eslemmy.es, seriously.iamincredibly.gay, test.dataharvest.social, programming.dev, kbin.knocknet.net, pawb.social, lucitt.social, longley.ws, kbin.dentora.social, atay.dev, lemmy.kozow.com, ck.altsoshl.com, pawoo.net, techy.news, lemmy.vergaberecht-kanzlei.de, lemmyonline.com, beehaw.org, pouet.chapril.org, kbin.pcft.eu, fl0w.cc, lemmy.sdf.org, lemmy.zip, feddit.dk, fedi.shadowtoot.world, lemmy.noogs.me, lemmy.kemomimi.fans, social.agnitum.co.uk, fediverse.boo, hive.atlanten.se, forkk.me, lemmy.ghostplanet.org, lemmy.mayes.io, lemmy.mats.ooo, lemmy.world, lemmy.sdfeu.org, lemmy.death916.xyz, geddit.social, masto.fediv.eu

I use Mullvad, and yesterday I started getting a 502 Bad Gateway error whenever I tried to visit the site when connected using Wireguard. Oddly enough, OpenVPN works fine. Are the admins intentionally trying to block VPN access, or did Mullvad's Wireguard servers get caught up in some sort of filter?

UPDATE: @[email protected] has responded

It is temporary as lemmy.world was cascading duplicates at us and the only way to keep the site up reliably was to temporarily drop them. We’re in the process of adding more hardware to increase RAM, CPU cores and disk space. Once that new hardware is in place we can try turning on the firehose. Until then, please patient.

ORIGINAL POST:

Starting sometime yesterday afternoon it looks like our instance started blocking lemmy.world: https://lemmy.sdf.org/instances

A screenshot of the page at https://lemmy.sdf.org/instances showing the lemmy.world instance on the blocklist

This is kind of a big deal, because 1/3rd of all active users originate there! A pie chart depicting the top instances by usershare. The lemmy.world instance is in the top spot with 1/3 of the total usershare

Was this decision intentional? If so, could we get some clarification about it? @[email protected]

It shows that there are 12 posts, but I'm unable to see them. It's a local community that I moderate. I tried to make a post. There were no errors. I'm even able to access the post here but it's not visible in the community. The post doesn't show up on my profile either. But there are some posts visible if I look at them from another instance e.g. through lemmy.world. The linked posts still doesn't show up, but could be due to delay in federation.

Edit: Just checked, this post doesn't show up on my profile either. But if I make a comment on another instance, it does show up on my profile. Weird.

UPDATE: It was happening due to a very stupid reason. I had unchecked "show read posts" in my settings. I do think that this isn't intended, since it should only affect the homepage/feed/whatever it's called here and not the profile pages and communities.

I can't use it at all with any third party clients. I can only open the instance site.

I saw the email on Friday re: LetsEncrypt certificates for personal homepages. Checking my own personal page, I see that it's b0rked right now- https://hanzo.sdf.org and http://hanzo.sdf.org take me... well, not to my home.

Are there some steps I need to go through to fix this that I'm just missing?

48

I view Lemmy from the mobile site on my phone and there’s a link on the top right of the page that opens this video on YouTube… is there a joke I’m missing here?

Looks to work well with Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox. However, you may need to logout, clear browser cache, close and restart your browser for success.

As Lemmy grows and develops we may encounter bugs. In particular, new bugs may surface after upgrading. We'll do our best to maintain a stable system based on the ongoing work. Our smaller sites in Europe, China and Japan may receive updates prior to our USA site as a way to test stability of new releases before implementing them here.

Please be patient and understanding as we grow and help you have a better Link Aggregator and Discussion Community experience that is open, federated and free of advertising.
