They must oblige within a certain time frame — even if your account has been suspended and I believe even if you've deleted your account. Curiously, this might be one effective way to protest. Golly I wonder what would happen if many people requested such reports simultaneously. It seems these must be processed manually by admins.

As a bonus, it's nice because all your comments and messages are searchable.

Hypothetically, they could implement some internal api and open Reddit to the fediverse no? What would happen then? (I’m sure they won’t because they want the money… but I’m just speculating…)

Today I installed Windows on my laptop and then I visited Reddit without being logged in. The two experiences are very similar.

I usually use Linux, so installing a new OS is really clean. You just end up with an empty operating system and you can do whatever you want.

But while installing Windows the damn program kept asking me for information and pressuring me into giving up my email address and phone number. Then when I finally got in, it's full of apps like fucking D!sney and Sp0tify... GTFO.

Then I go on Reddit, which I usually think of as a place where people post funny paragraphs and interesting questions... BUT NO... now it's just a splash page full of pictures and ads and other bullshit.

I know that you already know this, but it's sooo annoying and ugly.

Someone posted this over on Reddit right when it happened and I apparently saved it. I'm cleaning out my bookmarks and came across it. I hought you'd like to see why it's good news that we found Lemmy.

Since the API change RiF was still usable in logged-out mode, however, it's now consistently not loading posts anymore. They recently updated the "logged-out user experience" (see link below), which may have also been used to finally kill any RiF stragglers.

Good news is that Sync for Lemmy just released so the transition on mobile is finally easy!

I am running it right now and deleting 13 years of wasted time. I am so sick of the downvote trolls and hate.

So I'm in the bus, happily browsing Lemmy in Jerboa. I clicked on a Reddit link in a Lemmy post that silently opened the Reddit app without my noticing (cuz I was paying attention to my bus stop). The subreddit had this grey theme going on, so overall the Reddit client kinda looked like Jerboa.

I kept on browsing, but then I thought "That's odd, my Reddit comments show up in Jerboa... Does it aggregate? That's slick. But how does it know my Reddit creds?"

Kept on browsing some more... Wow! They even thought of making the karma points look red. Jerboa is really slick!

And then I went to my home, the UI turned bright red again and I had a "Oh..." moment... Tap twice on the square button, back to Jerboa.

That was an oddly mind-bending 20 seconds.

~~Opera GX was showing squares in place of icons and wasn't working well, so I disabled GX's adblocker and cleared cache. That logged me out and now this is all that gets loaded in when i go to a post. Does anybody know how to fix it?~~

Is there a place to watch lemmy user numbers in real time? interested to see if there's a spike as users try out something else with their new free time.

I've been sharing links to the fediverse - interesting discussions, memes, you name it.... Whenever I get a chance.

That's how I got my friends on Reddit over the years. Keep sharing links every chance you get, and share investing content you run across elsewhere here every chance you get.

Exposure drives engagement.

In the old days, official reddit announcement posts were a little different. Spuds, or another high-level admin would reply to a comment. Dozens of users would then reply with something like "When are you going to ban r/the_donald." The threads were massive and quickly became unwieldy, but they seemed organic.

Once reddit started hiring admins who don't seem to really know what reddit is, I started to notice a new trend. By now it's moved on from a trend to a template or better yet, an archetype.

Here is the archetypal pattern to an official Reddit announcement post in 2023:

1. Reddit makes an announcement that is downvoted below 20%.
2. The individual admin making the announcement (sometimes) litters the post with cringe gifs and meme-speak in a ham-fisted attempt to break the ice.
3. This admin will only be authorized to speak on the topic of the post but will be asked about a range of items.
4. The admin will answer 4-8 questions, mostly praise or comments with a neutral or positive tone.
5. The admin replies will mostly be downvoted well into the double digits.
6. After answering a few questions, often without ever replying to any follow-up questions, the admin vanishes as the thread is overwhelmed with criticism and ridicule.

In a short time, reddit will announce a new contributor program that will use some kind of crypto currency to allow users to pay other users for content. If recent patterns hold, and we all know they will, there will be aspects of this program that are surfaced in the comments of the announcement. These aspects will be alarming or concerning in some way and will highlight ways in which bad actors could exploit the feature. It will be clear that reddit had not considered these items raised by users and did not adequately interact with their userbase prior to the feature announcement to ensure the smoothest possible launch.

Reddit management doesn't seem to fuly understand that the freedom they grant their mods to build and manage their communities -- which is the entire reason that users come to the site so that they can be marketed to -- creates a much higher bar for communication and interaction around site architecture and feature changes with those mods / users. The pattern has been repeating for years: new features are rolled out half-baked, are not highly adopted. Admins are disincentivized to iterate on these features because of the low adoption rates. The feature is then abandoned or deprecated.

The last announcement post on r/modnews by the VP of community was the worst example since 2015 when Victoria was fired. Reddit, inc has done nothing to mitigate the anger, they haven't even apologized, without which no healing could ever happen.

And the next announcement post will be no different...

I was just browsing a thread on c/nfl looking for new mods. There were multiple 12+ year Redditors there offering to help.

Got me wondering. There are 14,000 of us in this community. How many of us are ten year plus users who have just had enough?

Edit: I didn't expect this post to be as poignant as it became. There are so many of you... I can't reply to everyone. I'm an 11 year user and have modded something like 150 subs over the years. I'm really sad too, but I'm finding that lemmy has most of the content I'm looking for, just needs more comments.

The API was a big blow, but removing awards on past posts and deleting coin balances is really dumb.

Lemmy and kBin are two different platforms, and they can perfectly interact with each other! This means that they are a part of the federation. And they are only two members of the vast Fediverse.

As a great lemming once said: Fediverse is basically like a group chat, but for websites. This means that federated websites all agree to share their content with each other, constantly, at the same time.
