Greetings, so I final got wife permission to buy a pi zero 2 and a beeline 12s pro (n100) arriving tomorrow. I already have a nas drive for my media.

Question is what is the average setup and guides for this?

Of course I will be scouring this and other communities for info but the immediate items I want to fix are my plex/jellyfin server, setup RetroArch or equivalent gaming, then of course arr servers. But I would like to also get into reverse proxy and searxng, next cloud and pihole.

Any tips on how to make this beautiful?

OS recommendations? I currently run manjaro on my daily, but would think a kubuntu or kde fedora/debian spin might be better for these items.

Guides you can point me to? Suggestions for more or better options? There are plenty of answers in this community and I will look at what’s posted but any assistance is appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

I’m excited to start plying with the simple things

PrivTracker allows to share torrent files just with your friends, nobody else. Unlike public trackers, it shares peers only within a group which is using the same Announce URL. It really works like a private tracker, but can be generated with one click of a button.

Let's assume that in 10 years, AI has advanced absurdly, insanely fast, and is now capable of doing everything a Senior SWE can do. It can program in 15 different languages, 95% accuracy with almost no mistakes, can create entire applications in minutes, and no more engineers or SWEs are needed.... What will all the devs do? Do they just become homeless? Transition to medical field, nursing? Become tradespeople like plumbers, HVAC?

I am looking for new jobs as a Cloud Engineer. Being privacy conscious makes the job hunt relatively hard. I don't use LinkedIn. But most companies publish their openings on websites like this and almost all of them are a privacy nightmare.

As soon as you make an account on them, you are bombarded with thousands of emails and targeted ads. But if I made a temporary email for this purpose, I feel I might get blacklisted.

Honestly I feel kind of sad about today's corporate field.

I am building a Proxmox server running on an SFF PC. Right now I have:

  • 1 x 250 GB Kingston A400 Sata SSD
  • 1 x 512 Gb Samsung NVMe 970 Evo Plus
  • 1 x 512 Gb Kingston NVMe KC3000
  • 1 x 12 Tb Seagate Ironwolf Re-certified disk

I plan to install Proxmox on the 250Gb Kingston disk using ext4 and use it only for Proxmox and nothing else.

I am thinking of configuring ZFS mirrored raid on the two NVMe disks. Here one disk is on my mobo, and the other is connected to the PCIe slot with an adapter, as I have only one M2 slot on the mobo. I plan to use this zpool for VMs and containers.

Finally, the re-certified 12 Tb disk is currently going through a long smarctl test to confirm that it is usable and it is supposed to be used primarily for storing media and non-critical data and VM snapshots, which I don't care much about it. I will in parallel most likely adopt the critical data to a cloud location as an additional way to protect my most important data.

My question is should I be really concerned about the lack of DRAM in the Kingston A400 SSD and its relatively low TBW endurance (85 TB) in case I would run it only to boot Proxmox from it and I think the wear out of the drive would be negligible.

  • I have the option to exchange the Proxmox boot drive with a proper SSD, like a Samsung 870 Evo (SATA SSD, using MLC NAND and having DRAM cache). I would of course need to pay around 60% more but I am just thinking that this might be an overkill.
  • Do you think that using ZFS pool for the two NVMe drives will wear them out very quickly? I will have 3-4 VMs and a bunch of containers.
  • Is the use of a slow Proxmox boot drive (SATA SSD) going to slow down the VMs and containers as they will run on much quicker NVMe SSDs, or it won't matter?
  • Shall I format the Seagate HDD in xfs to speed up the transfer of large files or shall I stick to ext4?
  • What other tests shall I run to confirm that the HDD is indeed fine and I can use it?

Are these good prices considering the supposed 330W power consumption?

Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a (ideally) FOSS app that can help me transfer a large amount of files between mobile devices. The exact scenario I'm trying to solve for is transferring large amount of pictures and videos from a family member's iPhone to my Android mobile phone.

I've tried a few solutions (see below list) but they all had some short coming or issue. I would ideally love something that has a mobile app that can be installed, but that's only because in my experience mobile web browsers tend to timeout / hang when dealing with a large number of file uploads at once.

  • Filerun - Filerun worked the best in my testing and, if there are no other suggestions, I'll probably return to this one, despite it not being FOSS.
  • Pingvin - Worked the next best, but would time out more frequently than Filerun. As long as I would batch the upload to only a few hundred pictures at a time and kept the screen alive, it would handle the upload.
  • PairDrop - Loved the simplicity of this web app and not having to send or deal with share links, however I was unable to get it to send uploads of more than ~100 files at a time.
  • Immich - Honestly, a perfect solution but since I'm only trying to send select pictures between devices, way overkill. Plus, family members were uncomfortable with a solution that gave the perception that it was automatically uploading ALL of their pictures to my server.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions!

All the stories on the FP are about labor relations and corporate shenanigans. So anyway, do you like Star Trek or Star Wars better? Anybody still ike to read old school sci fi, for example I really love Poul Anderson's Polesotechnic League stories - the swashbuckling adventures of intersteller trador Nicholas van Rijn and his Solar Spice and Liquors company, David Falkayne, et al. Good old basic space opera.

I love the idea of having all my quick notes, to-do lists, knowledge base, journal, plans, etc., in one single, neatly organized place. Why wouldn’t I? But deciding on which Notion alternative to use is overwhelming.

There are so many options, and all claim to be the best. Online opinions are all over the place (as expected), and these apps aren’t exactly simple—they’re complex for good reasons, but that makes choosing one even harder. And don’t get me started on the endless YouTube videos on the topic—I could spend weeks or months researching this and testing every single one of them, but honestly, this is not how I wanna spend my time so I will ask you guys instead.

My Current Setup:

  • Markor: Used it for quick thoughts, journaling, and to-do lists but stopped using it because it’s not suited for everything, and there’s no sync between Android and Linux (becsuse it is android only).

  • Obsidian: Currently using it as my knowledge base and for long notes, simple to-do lists, and occasional journaling. Haven’t fully migrated to it or created an organized setup because I’m looking for a FOSS Notion alternative.

  • Standard Notes: Good for quick notes, but most features are paywalled, making it feel limited.

  • jtx Board: My go-to for journaling—it’s simple and quick to use.

What I need:

  • FOSS, but only if it’s just as good as proprietary options in:
    • Auto-sync between my Android phone and Linux desktop
    • Journaling
    • Quick notes
    • To-do lists
    • Planning
    • Managing personal projects
    • Writing down thoughts
    • A really good Android app
    • Easy to use
    • Free for personal use

What I don’t care about:

Collaboration. This is for my personal use—no sharing, no team features.

Given my messy current setup and specific requirements, can anyone give me some recommendations?

I’m a business analyst, and a big part of my job involves working with engineers and product managers to gather detailed, in-depth information. For reasons I don’t fully understand (though I have my theories), I often find that engineers, in particular, seem oddly reluctant to share the information I need. This makes the process more challenging than I’d like. Does anyone have tips or tricks for building trust with engineers to encourage them to share information more willingly and quickly?

EDIT: Here's a summary with more details for those who requested more info: I’m working on optimizing processes related to our in-house file ingestion system, which we’ve been piecing together over time to handle tasks it wasn’t originally designed for. The system works well enough now, but it’s still very much a MacGyver setup—duct tape and dental floss holding things together. We got through crunch time with it, but now the goal is to refine and smooth everything out into a process that’s efficient, clear, and easy for everyone to follow.

Part of this involves getting all the disparate systems and communication silos talking to each other in a unified way—JIRA is going to be the hub for that. My job is to make sure that the entire pipeline—from ticket creation, to file ingestion, to processing and output—is documented thoroughly (but not pedantically) and that all teams involved understand what’s required of them and why.

Where I’m running into challenges is in gathering the nitty-gritty technical details from engineers. I need to understand how their processes work today, how they’ve solved past issues, and what they think would make things better in an ideal world. But I think there’s some hesitation because they’re worried about “incriminating” themselves or having mistakes come back to haunt them.

I’ve tried to make it clear that I’m not interested in punishing anyone for past decisions or mistakes—on the contrary, I want to learn from them to create a better process moving forward. My goal is to collaborate and make their jobs easier, not harder, but I think building trust and comfort will take more time.

If anyone has strategies for improving communication with engineers—especially around getting them to open up about technical details without fear—I am all ears.

Today I was trying to download Affinity Photo 2 from the websites listed on the megathread, as normally I do exactly that and everything goes just fine.

But when scanning the downloaded files. Windows Defender detected it as hacktool.win32.keygen and malwarebytes as Generic.Malware.AI.DDS.

In the case of Windows, I am guessing that it is not detecting a virus but the actual crack right? That's what that means as far as I'm aware. But what surprised me was malwarebytes, it has sometimes warned about cracks but it's not something it does often, and I don't recognize the detection code, but it seems to be using AI to detect malware now?

Is this something that is known to happen? Malwarebytes AI seems to be detecting cracks as malware... Or is this actually a virus?

I put it in quarantine just in case, but I am guessing this has to be false positives, as it happened with 2 different downloads from 2 different websites.

VirusTotal results also flagged it as "malware", but seems to be also detecting the crack. https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/127540f7b3558a94f6e8a4ce9c695231e8715e20a17da4584d5df99035a79d49/detection

Someone on Lemmy posted a phrase recently: "If you're not prepared to manage backups then you're not prepared to self host."

This seems like not only sound advice but a crucial attitude. My backup plans have been fairly sporadic as I've been entering into the world of self hosting. I'm now at a point where I have enough useful software and content that losing my hard drive would be a serious bummer. All of my most valuable content is backed up in one way or another, but it's time for me to get serious.

I'm currently running an Ubuntu Server with a number of Docker containers, and lots of audio, video, and documents. I'd like to be able to back up everything to a reliable cloud service. I currently have a subscription to proton drive, which is a nice padding to have, but which I knew from the start would not be really adequate. Especially since there is no native Linux proton drive capability.

I've read good things about iDrive, S3, and Backblaze. Which one do you use? Would you recommend it? What makes your short list? what is the best value?

I'm looking for a (preferably) open source or foss android app that can tune into web radio stations. There are plenty of apps for mainstream radio stations, but what about an app that allows you to connect to some awesome Internet radio stations? I remember the old shoutcast stuff. I dunno if this stuff is dead or thriving? Thank you.

Will this become available in older models like FSR and Framegen or will it be exclusive to RDNA4. It would be a boon to RDNA3 mobile chips if the performance gain is comparable to FSR3.

I have a ZFS RAIDZ2 array made of 6x 2TB disks with power on hours between 40,000 and 70,000. This is used just for data storage of photos and videos, not OS drives. Part of me is a bit concerned at those hours considering they're a right old mix of desktop drives and old WD reds. I keep them on 24/7 so they're not too stressed in terms of power cycles bit they have in the past been through a few RAID5 rebuilds.

Considering swapping to 2x 'refurbed' 12TB enterprise drives and running ZFS RAIDZ1. So even though they'd have a decent amount of hours on them, they'd be better quality drives and fewer disks means less change of any one failing (I have good backups).

The next time I have one of my current drives die I'm not feeling like staying with my current setup is worth it, so may as well change over now before it happens?

Also the 6x disks I have at the moment are really crammed in to my case in a hideous way, so from an aesthetic POV (not that I can actually seeing the solid case in a rack in the garage),it'll be nicer.

Title. A particular game Ive been looking for for ages is dead in torrents/dl. Now its sequel is also out.

I found old reddit forums where you could request such games, but theyve been dead for 2+ years.

Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to use the search bar but it is not the best, not showing some of communities on different instances.

Is it possible to see the full list of Lemmy communities? I am using Voyager BTW.
