No, I don't think so. Not in the sense that social media became defined. Web forum, and bbs rooms, existed long before the term. The key difference and turning point was removal of anonymity, and the concept of self promotion. I know they are similar and overlap, but the evolution from one to the other did occur. Reddit and Lemmy still have more in common with news aggregation and forums than say a Titter, Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok. Most of the content here is in reference to something else, end then discussion are on that.

I don't consider this or reddit social media. I don't know anyone, nor do I care to.

Instead it is like a collection of forums since forever like in the bbs days.

I pick and choose what rooms to go in and learn something. But it isn't about me, or staying connected. You know, the social part.

Curious what that would be... I use neither Google nor Microsoft for personal use and I have an msdn, lol.

I am still active in several forums. They are great and have even more of a sense of community them they used to. People talk about the subject and even meet in person around the world.

I also host a forum for a different group. No ads either cause fuck that shit.

I am curious why you like about it. I was a Relay user, and it was the only one that was really good for me. I didn't care for sync, it seemed ok, but not quite good enough.

But after moving to Lemmy I went with Jerboa and Thunder. Both are good enough. What could sync possibly have that you pay for?

I know for relay I miss: auto mute. Everything is mute by default. Then slow and fastforward for all media, and a download button.

I have exactly the opposite experience. Google has gone to shit, and duckduckgo gets me there faster 90% of the time. Plus the results are short and concise, or immediately helpful.

The SEO of the internet has really fucked googles algorithm. At least with duckduckgo I can end the search with !g to switch to google if I need a second go, but you cannot !d in google.
