Well they're privacy "conscious" but still feel trapped. IMHO the first sentence is even more telling namely "privacy and convenience are two extreme opposites" as a justification. It's not necessarily true, namely one can use... well pretty much anything BUT Google or Meta product and have a perfectly convenient experience. They are just used to it, so amalgamating what they are used to to what is objectively convenient for all.

Maybe some day in the near future they will decide to go from being conscious to active about it and I can tell in advance, they are going to feel a lot better, but it requires more than introspection, it requires action.

Indeed, same here but while using my own domain name, this way if some day, for whatever reason, either they go "bad" or I find "better" I can switch without much worry.

PeerTube to serve my content and yt-dlp or youtube-local to watch.

If I really had such a concern I'd use a Linux phone, e.g PinePhone or PinePhone Pro, and I would program it so that unless a certain command has been ran, if it boots or stay too long (e.g 1s) without a SIM then it deletes sensitive data.

Proton Visionary for few years now, iirc paying about $200/y. Honestly I mostly just use for ProtonMail. Once or twice a month I use ProtonVPN but it's rare. Same for calendar. I don't use ProtonDrive as I prefer to rely on NextCloud on Webo, mostly due to rich document editing capabilities.

Overall very happy with it but I admit one of the motivation for paying so much for Visionary was both to support the project AND to rely on my own domain. This way if for whatever reason Proton goes to shit, which I surely hope not, I can seamlessly switch to another provider, or self host, and nobody would notice the difference, no lock-in despite quality and trust.

Supposedly the FAA doesn't fuck around and yet he managed quite alright with SpaceX, cf https://www.techwontsave.us/episode/186_spacexs_regulatory_evasion_has_consequences_w_eric_roesch
