It's gone further here.. we have shops with scanners so you scan the goods as you go around.. in theory speeding up checkout but..

  1. 25% of the time you end up selected for 'random check' so an employee has to come and rescan everything anyway
  2. If there are any 'restricted' items a like painkillers, a different employee has to come over and allow them.

Given the chronic understaffing meaning you're basically in a queue for attention, it frequently takes longer to get through the 'rapid' checkouts than it would if I simply queued up and got someone else to do it. But as far as the supermarket thinks they're winning as they pay fewer people.

It's part of Play services, so most phones will get it.

Or a fine of 6% of global revenue, which isn't small.

It's built into the OS since apple and google agreed common standards for tag detection.

The google compatible tags (which aren't launched yet, possibly because of stuff like this) will be detected by apple devices too.

I made mine deliberately incompatible by disabling the fTPM but started getting the upgrade prompts recently.

They're getting there with windows 11.. first it was 'hey you're compatible with windows 11' now they've stepped up to a full screen non-skippable screen a big 'upgrade to windows 11' but still with a button to stay on windows 10 hidden in the corner. It's only a matter of time before that button disappears.

It's shown itself with the latest kerfuffle.. the discussions (apart from the occasional nutter) haven't devolved into people calling each other nazis yet. In fact some have been positively educational.

It's never really been an accurate measure.. it's a hard thing to do, since federation is so loose. The estimate varies between 10m and 14m users currently (I presume 'active' users is based on posts).

You'd think that, but that's pretty much what X has been doing all along..
