Is this why Freedesktop, GNOME, KDE, Haskell, & others self-host their GitLab community editions? These must not be the real FOSS projects.

The pull request model Microsoft GitHub force on users ends up being a colossal waste of everyone’s time & it’s the only model offered. It’s also a social media platform which encourages star hacking, READMEs that are actually RENDERMEs, focusing too much on making one’s graph green, etc. that are bad for project quality & mental health IMO. This doesn’t sound like a “premier” platform but the result of lock-in & network effect. The way to break is to go host elsewhere… & since Git is a distributed version control system, this should be encouraged.

Fuck banking institutions & their apps. We are seeing them eliminate online banking now & cash is slowly not being accepted by vendors & in-person experiences are worse—instead everything is siloed to only Android or iOS & disallow any sort of modifications to your device with all these attestation assertions. If a user wanted to ditch their phone, go Linux, use an unGoogled phone, or get a dumbphone, etc. they will be disconnected from the banking network—to which most users would view as an immediate nonstarter. Apple is just a different data-collecting advertising business.

Doom Emacs is the Emacs users that found their operating system, but are trying to stumble their way into a good text editor :)

Church of Emacs vs. Cult of vi is the only true rivalry. Enlightenment will only be found taking one of these paths.

legitimate uses for opening a site in a new tab; e.g. when it's an external website

This is not a legitimate use—this breaks the default user agent behavior & completely removes the autonomy of opening in the current window (there are tons of ways to open in a new tab/window). Consider rechecking the article linked higher up the thread tree.

If TypeScript didn’t have terrible type-level ergonomics, this wouldn’t look so bad—even if this toy example is largely just a brain exercise

Fairphone removed the headphone jack so it’s pretty useless as a personal electronic device IMO

I like that Google is always the one recommending this while also being the one that does some of the most obvious user agent sniffing

Yup. It’s privately held, not a community or non-profit-held registry.

Anything ran by Microsoft is a privacy concern (includes Windows, Teams, npm, GitHub)
