I had so many of the SSI gold)silver box titles. Death Knights of Krynn was my first IIRC

https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%B3%E3%83%9C%E3%83%AB%E3%83%88 seems to have a bit of a different approach stating that D&D 3rd ed. changed them to be more reptilian. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kobold actually seems to corroborate this. I played D&D since the end of the 1st ed. days and I think of them as kinda dog-like heads that were also scaly. I have a 2nd ed. Monstrous Manual, but it's on the other side of the world at the moment so I can't check.

I'm not buying the OP here.

I always said "in GIN icks" (gin like the alcohol) based on someone else's pronunciation years ago. I never realized it was meant to have anything to do with "engine" as a result.

Japan -- Probably Burger King for anything with more than like 10 locations (I'm specifically hedging here because I think we have like 3 Shake Shacks or something). MOS is OK as is Freshness, but they're not worth the money IMO. Edit: forgot Lotteria is here as well. I'd probably take Lotteria > MOS > Freshness.

For what we have with more than a few locations from memory

  • MOS - Japanese chain
  • Freshness - Japanese chain
  • Lotteria - Korean chain
  • First Kitchen/Wendy's -- we used to have full Wendy's but they combined with First Kitchen. They're OK.
  • KFC if you count chicken burgers
  • McDonald's
  • Burger King

There are other more regional chains that I'm not remembering here. Shake Shack has a handful of locations. In-And-Out has apparently done a couple of pop-ups. If any other foreign chains made it over lately, I'm not aware.

A lot is still relevant, I think. Additions would probably be on facial-recognition-avoidance and perhaps avoiding surveillance more broadly. As opposed to phone phreaking and other telco stuff, probably more internet and programming-focused things would exist.

In Japan, there are a couple of chains that exist and smaller restaurants (basically all in the areas where foreigners are and moreso near US militar bases). "Taco rice" is a local take that is basically taco ingredients served over rice instead of in a taco shell. Almost all of the places are adjusted to Japanese tastes by default, so a lot lower on the spice. Lots of foreigners living here end up going to one of a couple of places (two of which are basically Chipotle knock-offs for however "Mexican" you might consider that) or giving up and making their own. We did get Taco Bell a few years ago (again "Mexican") which has a more limited menu. I wasn't impressed, but I never cared for US Taco Bell, either, but it had lines lasting hours the first days/weeks it was open.

I think I may have seen a video or two. Specifically, the content on the Japan subreddits is more about navigating very specific visa or legal or financial issues that generally require tailored advice.

The only thing I still go to reddit for are the communities based on living in Japan and financial stuff in Japan. They never wanted to move over and have super useful info by people living here for decades that really help visa, legal, and financial issues.

Not enough info. I live in a place with earthquakes, typhoons, volcanoes, and tsunamis so it might be worth it. I also like to take my motorbike to the middle of nowhere sometimes and don't currently have any other device to contact anyone.

Looking at how even WWII units were segregated, schools not getting integrated until the '60s, etc. I'm unfortunately not sure they really lost to begin with (which should not be allowed to pass again if there is a next time).

It's the end of the world (as we know it)?
