I'm not doing research here while being an internet expert. But more people are killed every year in canoe-related incidents than volcano related incidents.

Yeah, I check in often, and the lines of communication are open. Helps to have no lying (in general), but especailly to my kids (which unfortunately needs to be said because so many people feel like it is ok).
I'm disappointed this conversation went this way. I'm way over on the "lecturing my kids" side of life. A discussion of what this meme means to those "being lectured" could provide insight to others.
I'm already going to check my lecture-meter to make sure I'm not boring my kids to death.

Almost exactly your same situation, I got mad and took control of my firewall.
People donate time, and some people host servers and pay bills because they can. I don't think the whole point of federation is amortizing the costs across instances, but it is a perk. Most people want to know what to join, which is why lemmy.world got so big, so fast. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'll bet their donations do not match their costs.
Mastodon is totally cool, I'm on board, but normies don't know what it is.
