Even if AI magically got to the point of providing accurate and good results, I would still profoundly object to using it.

First, it's a waste of resources. The climate impact of AI is enough of a reason why we should leave it dead until we live in a world with limitless energy and water.

Second, I don't trust a computer to select my sources for me. Sometimes you might have to go through a few pages, but with traditional search engines at least you are presented with a variety of sources and you can use your god given ability of critical thinking.

I honestly think a lot is solved with the new onboarding experience in Mastodon, even though it's controversial in the fediverse.

If the twitter exodus to Mastodon happened today I suspect the main problem, except the servers having to deal with millions of people trying to sign up all at once, would be the lack of quote posts. Which is at least on the roadmap.

Trust me, we'll do the exact same thing again, having learned nothing and with the same exact person on top. Literally the same exact thing that enabled all the fascists some months ago.

It's going to be great this time around!!

Bluesky is spreading like wildfire in academia at least.

And much like wildfire, it's going to be a fucking disaster. I don't understand why people who are paid to be critical thinkers would jump to another platform owned by a centralised actor. It'll be the same shit all over again.

For anyone out of the loop on Israeli politics: Netanyahu is evil enough to make Musk look like child's play. What a fucking panel.

Fuck them both.

Well, in theory social media platforms could be good. The idea is solid - you follow trustworthy people, they post valuable information, you see it.

I think for example journa.host is an interesting experiment in making social media actually valuable - everyone there is a confirmed journalist of some sort.

Of course, it can never be perfect. But it allows for greater variety of content: I often find myself reading just two or three newspapers regularly, and in the end social media posts are useful supplement that gives me stories I might not otherwise see elsewhere. That said, I have a pretty strictly curated Mastodon feed.

Of course you can search for just "eos" alone, but when trying to troubleshoot specific issues it gets much more complicated. Believe me, I've been there.

Such as this issue, which I eventually found a solution to on the e/OS/ forums:
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=eos+camera+quality+%22fairphone+3%22&t=ffab&ia=web
The results have very little to do with /e/.

It's by far the worst part of the project. Any time you have a problem - however minimal - you have to search specifically in the community forum because there's just no way in hell including /e/OS in the search terms is going to help you find anything useful at all.

You can install your own launcher - I prefer the KISS launcher, which is great at getting out of your way and just do exactly what you want it to do as efficiently as possible.

Similar experiences on the Fairphone 3. MicroG is fantastic - everything you unfortunately need from Google services, but in a way that maintains your privacy.

At least on the Fairphone 3, downloading an apk for the Google camera app turned out to be a lifesaver though - the open source camera applications were unfortunately not capable of producing as good pictures, which is very important to me. :)

Yes. I guess at best it's technically the truth because the masters of war tend to sit safely miles from the front lines plotting death and destruction; the don't literally "march" on earth.

There is no fighting in the war room.
