I used to use VLC for music, but these days I use Symphony to play local files on my phone. VLC tended to struggle when scanning or indexing large folders (which it did all the time...), while Symphony is a bit better at that. That said, I still use VLC for video and for casting things from my DLNA server (VLC supports Chromecast).

For ebooks, I've used Librera FD and that has been mostly OK. I'll checkout the two you mentioned though. Thanks!

I've been using Weechat-Android to connect to my self-hosted Weechat for over a decade. This is one of the killer mobile apps that keeps me on Android and I love it.

I also have a couple instances of thelounge that people use on mobile via the PWA (progressive web app).

Adding 16 KB Page Size to Android (android-developers.googleblog.com)

Android 15 has been refactored to support using 16 KB page sizes, and file systems like EROFS and F2FS have been made compatible.

A page is the granularity at which an operating system manages memory. Most CPUs today support a 4 KB page size and so the Android OS and applications have historically been built and optimized to run with a 4 KB page size. ARM CPUs support the larger 16 KB page size. When Android uses this larger page size, we observe an overall performance boost of 5-10% while using ~9% additional memory.

In order to improve the operating system performance overall and to give device manufacturers an option to make this trade-off, Android 15 can run with 4 KB or 16 KB page sizes.

The very first 16 KB enabled Android system will be made available on select devices as a developer option. This is so you can use the developer option to test and fix (if needed) your applications to prepare for Android devices with 16 KB page sizes in the near future.

This is also a lemmy community: [email protected]

Google announced its fall lineup of Pixel phones today: three standard phones and a second tablet-esque folding model. There are new chips, new cameras, Satellite SOS, and some notable promises, like the 9 phones being "twice as durable" as their Pixel 8 equivalents and getting seven years of updates. But as you might expect this year, they're primarily showcases for all the things Google's Gemini AI promises to do for you.

I've used Fastmail with a custom domain for a few years now... (5+?) and have been really happy with it. I wish it was a bit cheaper (or had a better family plan), but it works well with my terminal email client (mutt).

The web client is pretty quick and I use the calendar there all the time. Fastmail supports all the normal standards such as CalDAV, so you can use it with third party applications.

You can self-host libreddit, which is what I do, and it will still continue to work. That said, it is on borrowed time as development has mostly stopped.

All the public instances are unusable b/c of the rate-limits, unfortunately.

Could be what communities you are subscribed to. I run a small instance with about 3ish users, and here are my stats after about 3 months as well:

9.5G ./pictrs
12G ./postgres
8.0K ./lemmy-ui

What version of lemmy are you using? A recent update also introduced some space savings in the database (I think).

Yeah, this is what I do... I host a couple of ergo IRC servers and an instance of thelounge for those that want that interface (also offer gamja). Personally, I use weechat to connect to the server.
