Edit: got it right after posting whoops

"I use..."

I dislike a lot of their decision making, and I avoid Google Chrome because of repeated shenanigans.

I use Google docs, Gmail, google photos, etc. because it just works for me with school and work. I might switch to something for photos, but I don't hate google. Just wish they'd be better

I've been meaning to look that up for a while

OpenAI was created as an open source (which is why I named it “Open” AI), non-profit company to serve as a counterweight to Google, but now it has become a closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft.

Interesting

Mozilla is a non-profit organization

Our mission is to ensure the Internet is a global public resource, open and accessible to all.

They sell some services to fund their other initiatives

This looks even scarier than that TV/camera device by Facebook.

It’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and uses a camera, depth, and motion sensors to track and record its surroundings. It has a built-in speaker, which Humane calls a “personic speaker,” and can connect to Bluetooth headphones.

Hell no. If a friend starts wearing a subscription-based body cam connected to "AI", I'm going to cut them out of my life.

It also sounds so stupid as a concept. Why would I use this instead of a phone camera? The laser display sounds like a much worse equivalent to a tiny smartwatch screen. The only use case might be when doing sports/activities, but we'd need a much more robust device for that (and much faster response times for it to be useful)

Before this comment gets downvoted

This is true, and it's not one or the other. We can try to do the best we can to protect our privacy and also improve it further (with new tools, practices etc.)

I would rather that good people don't completely abandon the platforms where so many people are. Both to share positive messages and promote good things, but also because good people deserve those social connections too.

I saw this page a while back and it's something we don't talk about enough in privacy discussions: https://www.socialcooling.com/

I also don't like when the only advice given is "uninstall and delete your account, you deserve it otherwise". We can do better

My advice for tiktok:

  • promote other platforms to people
  • see how much you can do from the mobile site (they limit it intentionally)
  • If you really have to install it, check out Shelter to sandbox the app away. It will still track a lot, but it will be somewhat boxed away

Local food bank is a good one around where I am located

Edit: didn't notice the community

Privacy wise I donated to Signal for a bit. Hope to donate to more things eventually

Good point :) Here's the blurb from the pinned post in [email protected]

A great way to find lesser known communities is to look at the /communities page on an instance. For example: https://lemmy.ca/communities

🌐 Instances to look through

  • pangora.social (NEW): Great way to find instances related to a particular topic. This is also great for picking an instance when first making an account/moving accounts.

For those advertising communities, also try posting on [email protected]

As for some of the ones I'm helping with

I took a peek at my feed for the first time in years. It's all junk lol, no one I care about is posting anything

The only thing worth seeing is my local Buy Nothing group, but there are other services popping up which do something similar.
