This is the privacy community, and they were discussing the privacy aspect.

The concern isn't about getting your chats leaked, there's no incentive to just give away data that is collected. The concern is usually about a malicious group (company, government, criminals) abusing the data that they can get their hands on.

My understanding is that it IS encrypted, and its supposed to use the Signal protocol (Signal developed it and released it for others to use)

The problems are with

  • metadata (like the other comment explained)
  • closed source, so we take their word on it for how it works. It's possible they're being misleading or doing something shady

See this image from a few years ago:

Note that signal does require this, which isn't in the chart:

  • phone number (for now)
  • last active date
  • sign up date (I think)

Then you don't need eyes anymore? I take eyes now, VR comes ~~next week~~ "sometime in the future"

In all seriousness, the renders look pretty cool. I'd like to try them someday

If a company pauses activity permanently, and musk opens up the handle as his latest tantrum, could the company sue for damages?

Or is the best call to just say "pausing temporarily" and have it be permanent in practice

Makes sense, I'll have to start doing that.

One more question out of curiosity, how do you store the drive after?

I was thinking of getting a proper fireproof safe someday, but that might make it so I get lazy with the backups

Supposedly they're actually working on upgrading the system

So it should be improving soon even if it isn't already

Do you have it plugged in all the time or do you periodically do a full transfer?

What do people use to have backups of their google drive content?

It's a little ironic that they protect SOME copyright and artistic styles (from giant corporations producing media) but not other copyright and artistic styles (independent artists and creators)

So all the reasons they listed here, it's ok to do that to everyone else just not Disney 😒

Time to switch to the open source / self hosted / jailbroken creation tools instead

Community blocking happens on Lemmy so I think it should be possible regardless

For anyone else reading about this :)
