I just noticed my ankle hurts. Why? No idea. How long has it been that way? Also no idea. I hope it goes away on its own.

I always saw "my computer" as infantilising. If something is going to be labeled as "my" thing, it should be because I applied the label.
Hasn't that been a thing pretty much as long as EULAs?
Been there. It sucks. Best of luck finding your crowd.
Some of us like to watch with other people.
Google was like that before Sundar.
Google targets ads they deliver based on the data they collect. They don't "whore out" the data. That's just a lie that's been repeated so often people take it as gospel. I've never seen a shred of evidence to support it, and when I worked there, the employee training everyone took annually was very, very clear on respecting user privacy and getting everything reviewed by privacy experts before it could be released.
They really seem hell bent on making their version numbers look like user agent strings.
You don't think the person who's ultimately responsible for a company's policies is important in a discussion of those policies? There's nothing arrogant about knowing you're the one at the center of a news story.
Do you have evidence of that or are you just repeating something you've heard? Mobile apps are heavily sandboxed so I don't see how they could be harvesting anything unless you explicitly grant them permission to do so.
A lot of "real" apps are just browser apps wrapped in a system web view with the assets pre-installed. That goes for both desktop and mobile apps.
What we really need more of, IMHO, are PWAs. They combine the benefits of regular web apps with with those of "native" apps built on web technology.
They all have the capability to support a UI where you type a message, hit send, and the message is delivered. This proves it's possible to make and support an interface that hides all the backend complexity. If they don't expose the same functionality through an API, it's because they don't want to, not because it's too hard.
I'm sure there will be some features that aren't fully supported across messaging platforms, but for basic use cases like sending a text or an image, there's really no excuse.
