It's funny, people said the exact same thing about Windows 10. It had ads and spyware. It also had Cortana, the AI garbage of its time. Consumers will never learn. Can't wait for Windows 12 to also be seen as the one where Microsoft has ruined Windows for real this time.

I've seen Linux users scream over basic transparently implemented opt-in telemetry. Something like this would absolutely not go over well were it implemented in a popular distro.

Nah, Lemmy is not really representative of the wider Windows userbase. The willingness to switch away from Windows is definitely going to be far higher in those who were willing to switch away from Reddit.

I did look it up afterwards and found out it could also be Arizona, but still wasn't sure. I figured porn sites would also be capable of mysteriously mistaking an Azerbaijani IP for a Texan IP. I also figured internationally obscure ISO 3166-2 subdivision codes were much less likely to come up than ISO 3166-1 country codes given that people are much less likely to know what they are, plus they are much more likely to overlap with each other and cause ambiguity. But it is very American to assume everyone else knows the US's subdivision codes and Lemmy probably has far more Arizonans than Azerbaijanis, so I wasn't completely sure either way.

What's AZ? Azerbaijan?

Visit about:compat. Sites already do that. Firefox can deal.

Dunno, I think I prefer patents. Unlike copyright, patents usually last a flat twenty years. Copyright expires either after 95 years or 70 years after the death of the author, which is ludicrous. Both are constantly abused, but at least patents expire in a reasonable amount of time.

itch.io also has a Linux app

So... why are people upset about this? I'd say it's about damn time. Having two settings apps is pretty ridiculous and it's honestly crazy it's taken them this long to ditch the control panel. I still remember people making fun of Microsoft's inability to drop control panel in the Windows 10 era. Is there anything special about the control panel or uniquely terrible about the settings app that would warrant this kind of negative reaction? Is it because of the settings that aren't available in settings? If they're preparing to drop control panel that probably means they're going to add whatever settings are still stranded on it to the new settings app, unless there's evidence that they won't do that.

There are pros and cons. I use both, because Lemmy on its own just isn't big enough to replace Reddit. Lemmy has a decent variety of active communities for very broad/mainstream topics, plus technology and left wing politics, reflecting the shared interests of most Lemmy users. But then for any topic that's more niche and doesn't have a disproportionally large overlap with the interests of Lemmy users, it kinda falls appart. A lot of the more niche subredddits I participate in have no Lemmy equivalent.

I'm also hesitant to call Lemmy's moderation better. One thing I've noticed with Lemmy mods is that they tend to be far too lenient with off-topic posts. Right now the top post for me on "All" is this post from [email protected]. You might notice that it isn't a meme in any way shape or form. You might also notice that it was literally posted by a mod from that community. This kind of thing happens a lot, communities on Lemmy are very prone to getting derailed away from their nominal topic.
