With a factory reset the phones encryption keys will be destroyed and nothing should be retrievable from that device. Even if the data isn't overwritten, without the encryption key no one could read it.

At least that's my understanding of the modern safety- and encryption features of recent phone models/mobile OS's.

The worst part: Apple's iCloud is end-to-end encrypted and even Apple can't see the users files, at least that is what they say.

If what the dude on Reddit states is true, then this is bad, really really bad! 😮

MetaGer is a metasearch engine focused on protecting users' privacy. Based in Germany, and hosted as a cooperation between the German NGO 'SUMA-EV - Association for Free Access to Knowledge' and the University of Hannover, the system is built on 24 small-scale web crawlers under MetaGer's own control. In September 2013, MetaGer launched MetaGer.net, an English-language version of their search engine.

It currently supports the following languages/regions:

Dansk (Danmark)

Deutsch (Österreich/Schweiz/Deutschland)

English (Great Britain/Ireland/Malaysia/USA)

Español (España/México)

Suomalainen (Suomi)

Français (Canada/France)

Italiano (Italia)

Nederlands (Nederland)

Polski (Polska)

Svenska (Sverige)

There is a TOR-hidden service too:

https://metager.org/tor

It is open source:

https://gitlab.metager.de/open-source/MetaGer

And has other useful features, for example:

That you can hide yourself behind our proxyserver just by opening the result anonymously? Use "OPEN ANONYMOUSLY"; this also affects the following links.

Alternatively I use some SearxNG-instances, preferably hosted in the EU:

Wouldn't encrypting the drivers and shutting it all down by a single button press work just like flushing the loo?! 🤔

And it all will still be recoverable, but by you only.

Have you ever tried any modern Linux desktop distribution?

I had a bad experience with Ubuntu and the likes about 10-15 years ago (as a daily driver for my desktop, that is). But a lot has changed since then.

Maybe take a look at Pop_OS or Linux Mint. I'm using the latter, it took less than 10 minutes to install and works out of the box! Everything else comes via it's "app store".

There is no need for the console, so you don't need to type any commands!

Even my parents are using it. And gaming works great.

You don't need the bootlegged version of SteamOS, there is ChimeraOS (GitHub).

Also Steam runs great on a lot of distros, I use ~~Arch~~ Mint btw. ;-)

For Epic Games, GOG and Amazon you can use Heroic Games Launcher (GitHub).

Ever considered DietPi?!

DietPi is an extremely lightweight Debian OS, highly optimised for minimal CPU and RAM resource usage [...]

-- A wild Codeberg appeared. --

Codeberg is a collaboration platform providing Git hosting and services for free and open source software, content and projects.

Website: Codeberg.org

The organization selected the European Union for their headquarters and computer infrastructure, due to members' concerns that a software project repository hosted in the United States could be removed if a malicious actor made bad faith copyright claims under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

In June 2022 the Software Freedom Conservancy's "Give Up Github" campaign (in response to the GitHub Copilot licensing controversy) promoted Codeberg as an alternative to GitHub.
