Most smart TVs have a dumb mode. As long as you can plug in anything you want you should be fine.

I feel like the web interface could be better. I would like to be able to hide posts, use keybindings to navigate, and generally the overall performance could be better. But we have third party clients, which is a huge plus!

No one is forcing you to use another app store. I'm sure the operating system will also allow you to turn off apps from unknown sources just like Android. More options for other people is not a bad thing. People paid for the device, they should be able to use it however they wish.
