well it doesn't have any value if it can't be sold or used

you're wrong, actually. Google sells ads, not data. They USE data to target ads which is where the big bucks are. If you block ads, all the data in the world wouldn't allow them to profit. So by blocking ads you are preventing Google from collecting any revenue from your participation

I shipped several android apps that were GPL licensed and FOSS but had in-app paid options. You could also download a fully unlocked version from f-droid. They were quite profitable and the statistics were surprising. Turns out people are willing to pay for good software

yeah and good luck getting a case with multiple USB-C front panel. I don't even think I've EVER used the USB-A on the front of my case

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

sure, but some people are already in a position where they already have only USB-C (me). I have adapters for the USB-A ports and it sucks. Just let me choose to get rid of the old shit that I don't need please

Well, first off I wasn't presenting a "FOSS first" argument here. Onshape is a closed-source browser based CAD software but it works really well and I enjoy it. PrusaSlicer IS FOSS, but it is developed by the folks at Prusa who build the Prusa i3 printers - it is widely considered to be the "standard" for 3D printing slicers, better than CURA for sure.

Second off, this argument has an element of truth but kind of misses the plot. It is DEFINITELY possible for FOSS to be better and widely used and there are a couple of examples. I don't have a ton of time right now but just for fun I'll list a few. Blender is a great one, don't really need to explain how good it is. Also, KiCAD is really good these days too, second only to Altium. There are many more as well!

To be fair, PrusaSlicer and its derivatives do have native Linux support. And you can use Onshape from the browser on Linux just fine and it is honestly really good. I do a lot of this stuff too

most users simply do not care. if it works, it works

I think Fedora and Ubuntu are easy recommendations!

also lifting that stupid ban on other browser engines, and I'd like to see the ability to change more default app stuff

Why don't you program the curve in the BIOS?

this is why r/Android moved to [email protected]. We even made our own instance dedicated to technical content. The reason most people I've been around mod is because they want to either fix a perceived quality problem or maintain a community that they enjoy frequenting.
