occasionally that's the case here, and then only with old redirect and ad blocker.

there is one sub i still go to, but now once every week or two--and only briefly, mainly to skim post titles for anything important i can go look up elsewhere... instead of every day. no more logging-in, either.

reddit could 404 permanently and i wouldn't shed a tear.

most users (outside of a few countries) have paid for windows. via oem or volume channels, as that's where the vast majority of users source their windows from. oem pc sales or volume licenses. whether the original was 7, 8, 10 or 11. at the end of the day, a legit activated license for windows 11 is, or was born from, a paid license.

i just did an install of 11 here on a test machine. specifically went looking for that option. didn't see it.

meanwhile, wordpad.. probably used by more people over the age of seven than paint is, getting axed.

microsoft has office subs to sell, but they do not have a photoshop or gimp or even a paint.net alternative to sell.

that's off to the lower-right. psychotic-evil.

i have cable, in the us, it goes out for awhile probably on a weekly basis. calling them is pointless.

if i really need internet--and i did a couple weeks ago when it happened (i don't carry an internet-capable phone), my office is less than five minutes away and has dsl. the phone company has proven itself to be far more reliable than cable, even if they are scummy, greedy bastards just like cable and wireless companies.

i had cable for reception. live in an area without adequate reception of 'local' stations without tall antennas and boosters. had it. they raise the price and raise the price, and move channels to separate 'tiers' that cost even more. well, they did it one too many times.

of course two months after, and having gotten used to it not on my bill anymore.... they go and do the last bit of the summary in op.. they raised the price of internet.

i haven't done anything specifically 'ai', and i've only heard of two of these.. digikam, but idgaf about facial rec for my own libraries. and the last one, for subtitle syncing. i tried it. it didn't do very well with the things i tried it on. so i still do that manually whenever i need to.

if you're in the u.s. check walmart for clearance desktops. we just picked up (to replace an older neighbor's dead atom-based desktop) a new i3, 8gb, 256gb nvme, slim desktop. inside it had mount points and the cables for two sata (3.5in + 2.5in) and a slim optical (or a 'creatively' mounted second 2.5in). we were going there to pick it up at a bit over $300, as i had seen it there the previous day. surprise! it had just got marked down again to ~ $200. original price was $400.

missed the bit about windows forcing an update and reboot, then crashing to an irreparable state, forcing a reinstall of the whole os and games that were installed.

that alone isn't worth 'yet another app'

it's titles that are also on other services (including free or 'ad supported'--and ones which work with ubo and/or pihole) or titles that seem to rotate frequently and continually between several services.
