at the point AI becomes self-improving

This is not a foregone conclusion. Machines have mostly always been stronger and faster than humans, because humans are generally pretty weak and slow. Our strength is adaptability.

As anyone with a computer knows, if one tiny thing goes wrong it messes up everything. They are not adaptable to change. Most jobs require people to be adaptable to tiny changes in their routine every day. That's why you still can't replace accountants with spreadsheets, even though they've existed in some form for 50 years.

It's just a tool. If you don't want to use it, that's kinda weird. You aren't just "debugging" things. You use it as a junior developer who can do basic things.

Zero farmers want to ban wind. They want to lease their land to power generation companies. They do it all the time, especially where they just graze cattle or sheep. They can do both at the same time.

Farmers own land to make money, not look at it.

Yeah "just maintain the servers bro" isn't going to work. The bandwidth alone is insane. There's a reason why there are fewer and fewer Lemmy servers since June 2023, even as total users are growing.

Accounting doesn't cut costs or do anything except counting money accurately. Those decisions are made by the operations department.

The problem is not landlords, which have existed for thousands of years. The problem is that the first time homebuyer programs suck ass. They're like "only 3% down payment! But you have to pay extra PMI, so it's still expensive monthly."

If the government really wanted to subsidize housing, they would subsidize home construction workers and materials. Right now old construction workers have to retire due to age or become contractors. So there are a ton of crappy contractors who have no business sense and a lot of construction experience.

Imagine if you could go to school for free to build your own house! Land in the US is almost free outside of major cities. The expensive part is workers and materials.

It's the same as going to a bank and letting the teller look at your face. It's to prevent someone from stealing your identity using a picture of your ID.

How can they verify the ID is real without physically seeing it? They look up the info but still need to verify that you are the person on the ID.

The "rewarding" theory is probably true. That's why so many people were hired to begin with. Boards were like "if we don't hire, we'll fall behind!" So they over-hired. Now they're like "we can easily hire more later. Fire these losers."

So you basically trained a ton of people on your internal systems and let them go? And you think randos will be able to pick up the slack when you need them in 12 months?

These companies are so dumb. Aren't they growth companies? Don't they have moonshots to work on or any good ideas for the future these people can contribute to? It's like they became big and lost the ability to innovate.

They have straps to tie them on you. You tie them together and hold them under the door. Or use any of the other crap floating in the ocean. Literally anything could be held in a shirt or pants. You can inflate your pants themselves by tying the legs together and blowing air into the waistband.

Because the CBP barely tried to access it? I feel like the CBP was just told to wait them out, like a child. Let Texas have a temper tantrum and wait.

They probably had to wait for the fence cutting equipment anyway. This isn't the DMZ border with North Korea. If there was a pressing reason to do it, it would have already happened.

Like I've said before, if Biden really wants to access it he could just sign the federalization order at 8 AM EST. All the Guard troops would wake up to a direct order to sit their asses down or lose their pensions. By 10 AM Texas time, the fence would be on the ground or the Guard CO would be unlocking the gate.

But that's what Abbott wants to happen so he can escape this dumb situation he created. Biden is trapping him by not taking the bait. Now Texas looks dumb paying money to lose in court. Abbott wants Biden to do something so he can shout "Federal overreach!" and get donations.

It's 100% drama. They've got you caught up in it.

No one in the National Guard is going to stop the CBP from cutting the fence down because their pension is on the line. The government of Texas doesn't control that.

No pension fund owns only commercial real estate. If anything, it's like 5% of their entire portfolio. Still, it's not necessarily a problem.

So in your simplified scenario, you have a pension paying retirees that owns 100% of a building. Say few businesses want to lease space in the building, and the value goes down.

They don't have to sell the building. They can just refurbish it and put the retirees in it. That's actually more tax efficient than paying the retirees who then pay their retirement home.
