Some things come to mind:

  • Each state could theoretically name a different candidate (all that primaries bullshit)
  • No unified federal law for voting for the fucking president; each state has different voting laws
  • Parties have to be registered at a state level and ONLY Rep and Dem exist on all 50. What the fucking fuck
  • Unlimited money spending
  • The fucking electoral college. Winner takes the whole state.
  • Election on tuesday (if i recall, that's a leftover of ye olde times because it's when rural people were more likely to be around cities)

'muricans somehow insist they are a democracy despite all the hurdles, weird laws and obvious gatekeeping that make it a very shitty republic where votes are NOT equal.

For comparison, Brazil's elections for president and state governors happen on the same year/day (also for some senators and federal deputies, but let's focus on president). It's direct vote counting, majority (50% + 1) wins. If no candidate gets more than half total votes, the 2 better voted candidates go to a 2nd turn, which happens 4 weeks after the 1st. Election happens on a sunday and there's an electoral tribunal that handles all the logistics across all 27 states.

Regarding expenditure, it took us a while to stop allowing corporations to finance candidates' campaigns (thanks in no small part to a supreme judge who wanted to keep that legal), the downside is that candidates with rich "friends"/families still have a significant advantage, since direct individual donations are still allowed.

I think we're about to circle back to circa 1000s yurop: "Now, my child, you behave while I try to sell you as a ~~slave~~ FREE ENTREPRENEURIAL COLLABORATOR to mr. Rich Douchebag, as that is the only way to go up the social and financial ladder."

I wonder if ancient Middle Eastern (pre-islamic) mythologies not being widely known in the eurocentric bubble has more to do with translation difficulties or just a snob view of the "other"; Persian empires had extensive written records (except for the Parthians)

As a Brazilian, I'm deeply ashamed that I never learned about that or frankly any other native mythology (Guarani, Tupi, Yanomami, etc)

Pretty much every place where humans lived on for any period of time has had a devastating flood event, so it's a "no brainer" when you think about it, much like how most (every?) ancient religions saw Sol and Luna as some sort of god/dess

I wish people would just give away good stuff like that where I live

The whole idea of making phones disposable was stupid from the get go. I'd say that most mid-tier phones from 2017 should be perfectly serviceable for every stupid app being widely used nowadays. High end phones from 7, 8 years ago are still perfectly fine

I mean, even power gamers barely need all the power that the high end phones offer, because mobile games always aim for the low end, with few exceptions.

That fucking Apple started with the stupid shit of gluing the phone, and every other fucking company copied that shit, really pisses me off. 2015 phones could have their backs opened and the battery changed if needed, no need for special tools.

Phones are unlikely to become open, as in owners can actually fuck around with the software and hardware as they'd like, anytime soon. A few try that, but it's unlikely to become mainstream because there's no market pressure

I miss having dedicated power and reset buttons, where you just press power and it immediately powers off, instead of the computer waiting just to be sure you're sure you meant to press the fucking button that is clearly labeled and out of the way to avoid incidents.

Officially, "its too hard". Realistically, they don't do shit because those shits bring in money by paying for exposition

Ships' sails. I mean, I know some small vessels still use them, but look at any paintings from 1500s-1800s and tell me those huge white pieces of cloth don't look cool.

Other points:

  • it's not mutually exclusive with any other neurodivergence, in which case they're "twice exceptional";
  • In an environment with unprepared people and professionals, they may be wrongly diagnosed as having some other neurodivergence.
  • It's not just a high IQ score;
  • Gifted kids can be problem students and have low grades;
  • Homework feels like torture (this is true to any child, tho);
  • They're very likely to question authorities and point out perceived hypocrisy (emphasis here on perceived, because pointing something and being right are different things);
  • As kids, they may have weird quirks for executing tasks, such as wanting to hold pencils the "wrong" way, or wanting to press against a wall to do homework;

Aos brasileiros que acabarem encontrando esse post, o podcast que assisti é o que linkei acima

I've been interested in checking out some "DIY" boardgames, ones that you could just print the pieces/sheets/cards/tokens/etc and play.

I'm mostly interested in boardgames that can be played with 4+ people and require little setup or rules introduction, as I'm pretty much being the "gateway drug" for the group (everyone I've shown Blokus so far has loved the game).

I'm ok with knowing about heavy games (stuff that takes an afternoon to finish) to keep an eye on for future reference

I've been reading a book on the Paraguay War, Maldita Guerra, and it mentioned how Solano Lopez (then Paraguay's dictator) planned to invade Mato Grosso and possibly take Cuiabá. Trips upstream from Assuncion to Cuiabá at that time would usually take 12+ days on steam ships.

What really surprised me is that this kind of information was supposed to be taught back when I was in school.

Some weeks ago, I've come across Delta Chat, whose main thing is "(near) instant messaging using your email"

That left me thinking, has this been attempted before? If not, why? Also, why (besides servers' limitations as means to fight spam) isn't this solution used more often, given that e-mail has been a decentralized solution for well over 40 years now?

Asking mostly because I have fuckloads of video courses, plus a number of movies, that I have yet to even check if the content is as good as their titles imply and I really feel like I'm mostly hoarding this stuff because I have no fucking clue.

Most major news sites, as well as some other sites of reading content like Medium, have a paywall for certain articles, but those are easily defeated by people who bother to search the internet.

As I suspect said companies are aware of that, and they don't react to properly protect their paid stuff, what do they expect to gain?

Although playing online works, I haven't tried a direct connection/invite with another person, due to me lacking PC master race friends.

In the general server list, I think the SA region stands for South America? In any case, my ping was really high, so actually playing online is not feasible for me.

I'm using IGG games' torrent version, it was a simple extract and run. The fake steam account name defaults to NooB, so I recommend you change it in the following folder: %appdata%\Roaming\Goldberg SteamEmu Saves\settings - The account_name.txt is just the shown name, while the user_steam_id.txt is the acc number. I've changed both. Keep in mind that changing the id might make your saves disappear, so you'll have to create a new world, then copy over the save files - %appdata%\Local\Pal\Saved

If you're a fan of survival crafting, this game is a must play. The fact that you can play solo and change the world settings (exp rate, stamina depletion, hunger, etc) anytime before entering makes it perfect for all skill levels. I just think the default capture rate is too low, but I guess it makes more sense when you're online in a guild?

No idea how many hours I've spent playing, but I'm definitely buying this game in a few months.

Not the ideal community (better for open ended questions), but I've been looking for a Droopy cartoon that I vaguely remember from ages ago.

The overall premise is not too different from Tom and Jerry's "The Royal Cat Nap". The gist of it was that Droopy had to guard a nobleman (king?) while he was asleep. Near the end, I distinctly recall Droopy handing dynamite sticks to the villains, the scene cutting to outside the castle with the duo running in and out with ever bigger dynamites, until a really big one blows them away. The scene cuts back to the king, who wakes up and removes the corks from his ears and talks to Droopy.

Thing is, looking at the list of Droopy cartoons, none of them seem to have a premise remotely similar to that. I'm wondering what I'm remembering wrong, whether the main character or what else.

Solved: It was Deputy Droopy. My memory was very wrong on how it actually played out for the most part. Thanks, everyone!
