My guess would be that it's simply because we are aware of the concept of extinction and have watched as other species have gone extinct. This causes some existential dread, like learning about death might.

This happened when I was a young kid and I thought it was so delightful. Now that I'm an adult, I'm just happy that I have a small boat in my yard. Although it's extremely unlikely that my yard could ever become flooded where I live now. Maybe I should give the boat to somebody on lower ground.

I saw signs like that in Japan at Chinese establishments. Also ones showing that you face away from the toilet while sitting on it.

Blew my mind.
