Far superior writers in the genre.

Alan Furst. Spy books set in the early days of WW2. For some reason they've been marketed as a series, but each book is a standalone with completely different characters. "Night Soldiers" and "Dark Star."

Dan Fesperman. "The Warlord's Son" is set in the days leading up to the US invasion of Afghanistan. Burnt out reporter and a self exiled Afghan search for bin Ladn.

Or the artist just drew something out of their imagination.

Pretty sure it's an Archie thing. I remember Sadie Hawkins dances when I was a kid, and never heard of the patch thing.

A quick search failed to find any actual 'patch dances.' I think it's more likely that the Archie writers were afraid of copywrite problems and came up with their own variation.

otoh, maybe I could have looked harder

Sadie Hawkins Days/Dances were a thing.

Another time comic strip lingo entered the mainstream. The US Army repeatedly claimed that jeeps were so named because they were 'General Purpose' vehicles. The troops all knew the real reason was that they were named for Popeye's teleporting pet, Eugene the Jeep.

Watch the movie and see what they have for 'ultimate decadence.'

Someone once asked Stan Lee who would win a fight between The Hulk and wonder Woman. Stan said whoever the writer decided.

We've already surpassed their worst nightmares.

The exception that proves the rule.

Say what you want about Henry Ford, he wanted to make a car that he himself would like to drive. Current management rides in the back seat and makes decisions based on marketing, not actual driving needs.

I remember a scene in "Play It Again, Sam" where the joke is that the businessman feels the need to call and check his answering machine as soon as he arrives at his friend's apartment.
